BK3 for Camping

I do believe that the BK3, and BK2 would be my last choices in the entire Becker lineup for backpacking. They'd be good choices for other things of course, but for how I backpack, they would be less than ideal.

For the weight of just the BK2, I can bring a BK9, and a mora. With that combo i can carve, batton, and chop better than the BK2 alone as well.

Even better?

Bring a small folding saw and a BK16 or BK10. The saw is faster, safer, and uses less energy to cut though anything bigger than about wrist /forearm size. The BK16/10/mora can easily baton that size wood if needed, and that combo weighs less as well.

Myself? On my last hike i did 28 miles in a single day (3 consecutive expected water sources being dried up on the last half of the hike made us finish the loop a day early where we knew water was). I carried my BK16, and my buddy and I shared one folding saw between us, which we didn't end up using this trip. They usually get used with my emberlit stove, but this time we used an alcohol stove, so it wasn't needed.
Nice! That's a really cool experience! :)

I'm going to have my BK7 and a folding saw, so I should be good there...

That's my setup too :) Nothing you can't handle with those :)
You make my heart sing just by saying those words. Too many people (I'm certainly not going to point anyone out specifically) are convinced that the only knife that's any good at camping is the BK9. I love the BK9's looks and I plan on getting one sometime, but I want to start with the BK7. Long story short, I'm encouraged to hear that there are other Becker fans who are willing to use their BK7s. :)

What a beautiful picture! I love your perspective! :) I'll have to add a picture of mine this weekend. ;)

While I'm a huge fan of the BK9, I don't think you could find anyone here who would say anything bad about the BK7. I've just personally found that if I want a "big knife", then I want a "BIG KNIFE", so the kind of in between size that is the BK7 isn't my preference. In fact, now that I've had my first experiences with a big machete (24" blade, used it for clearly my property of blackberry), I may even try a 12-14in machete instead of the BK9 (*gasp!).

How do you like that opinel folding saw? I've got a large corona (10in blade) saw, which works great for base camp, but I've been looking for something lighter for when I'm hiking/ etc.

Thanks man. Look forward to your pics :)

Thanks. Must admit that the BK9 is on top of my wishlist but have to make choises in life :). The 7 does an amazing job on most of my outdoor knife chores.

The Opinel saw is really awesome imho. Very light and easy to carry. Yet a very powerful tool that works just as well as the bigger folding saws I carried before. And the Oplinel wooden handle is hard to beat with plastic and rubber from its competitors.

Here's my "dynamic" duo in a TERRIBLE photo... :| As stated elsewhere, I really haven't gotten the opportunity to use my BK7 much, let alone use it with my saw.

Edit: I also should shrink my photos before I post them...

Goodlooking set you have there buddy.
Enjoy using it. No need to rush into it.
Love for tools will mostly grow with time and asventures imho.

The 7 is my go to when going for a hike and don't need a PAC and just want to have something . The 7 is cool in a kydex on my side not to big not to small. Is it better at chopping than a 9 or a 4, No. but it can do many things well enough to get it done. Never received any ugly stares while wondering on a trail when coming in contact with others most don't even notice it. I like that and it's kinda cool having the sense of security knowing if I need a good knife the 7 is a hell of good knife  but you can't not have a 9 :D

All good to take a long

i'm not a very experienced back pack camper. my pack tends to be a bit heavier than maybe it should be. having said that, there's no way I'm lugging my 3 out to the bush. the last time i took my 9, 15 and a saw. i may have had my 11 in my pocket too. even on shorter hikes I'll leave it at home. if we're at a drive up campsite, that's a different story. it's fun to play around with around the fire. maybe not as good at wood processing as some knives, but still fun.

I now try to take as little as possible :D To much will take its toll :(
