Hey guys, quick question, I jut received a bk5 a few dad ago. It's the only becker I have that doesn't have the rough coating and is stamped. Is this usual for the bk5? I'm used to the laser etched with gold and the rough coating.

When I saw the smooth black I was confused, then the stamped bk5 kabar etc and I'm thinking this is old stock? I just purchased it so not sure. Thank you guys.

Yes, it's older stock. That's just showing you how low sales have been for the 5. I have two. One etched and one stamped. You're all good.

No, not at all. I ordered mine from Amazon and it came with the old coating and the stamping. Honestly I prefer the stamp and the old coating so I think you got lucky like me.

Agreed! I have an older stamped model - love it. The blade is incredible. More folks need to use it.

How are you liking yours?

The stamping is better than my opinion because if you decide to strip the coating then you'll still have the Becker logo.

Uhm.....I thought that it was etched in the etched versions. That's typically in the metal, not the coating. If you stripped it chemically, the mark should remain.

Also, the knives I've stripped, I always stopped at the choil area (where the blade ends, before the handle), which would leave the coating over the maker mark. Keeps rust and stuff from occurring and doesn't affect cutting performance.

Yes you are correct but many people sand it to get rid of the grind lines so in that case it would be very faint or nonexistent.

I just opened it so haven't even able to use it yet. I was a little upset at first because I read the stamping can make micro cracks in the blade.

I would love to take off the coating but I don't know how well the vinegar patina would look. Maybe I'll wait to find something either better looking or more permanent.

I wish my BK's were stamped!

If I ever strip one of my blades the logo will be gone.:(
How will I be able to remember which is my 5 and which is my 11 then?......;)jk

Prefer stamping myself - sad I was late to the party and have mostly laser.

This is the only stamped one I have. I usually like the older ones but read about breakages on a bk9 and someone said it may have been related t stamping and micro cracks or something. Whether true or not I don't know but it made me happy for laser. I do prefer the look of the stamp as long as it doesn't hurt the blade.

Hope to see my 5 this week! We're having bad weather so I'm not sure :(
Chem strip does not remove the laser etch

etching is better than stamping for mechanical stress reasons.
Not that you're likely to have a problem.

If you care deeply, etch the mark deeper before you strip. Much better solution than trading it for a stamp.

Just got a new (old stock) 5; stamped and smooth finish - luvin' it!

Excellent blade and I think the smoother finish works nicely on this particular Becker.

As for any chance whatsoever of micro-cracks or any such thing, I worry not one bit given the combination of my reasonable use for this knife and Becker/Ka-Bar standing behind the product.

Not to sell the 5 short one bit, as it is my favorite Becker, but I will do things with the 2 and the 9 that I simply would not do with the 5 - it's a different blade for a different purpose.

Anyways, not allow thread drift, the 5 and the smooth black coating go well together in this knife. Enjoy!

The 5 is bigger in person than pictures suggest, isn't it?!

When I got mine, I thought, yipes! I'd hate to face someone with one of those in their hand.

But then I quickly thought also about how great a watermelon cutter it is going to be.

Perfect!

I was thinking the same thing, can't wait to use it for serving up slow smoked bbq brisket and watermelon, the looks of my guests should increase sales or cause them to flee...
