BK7 Bushcrafting (picture heavy)

I thought I read here in the forum that using gun blue on a knife used for food preparation was a "no go." I had plans of blueing my bk14 until I saw that. I'll try to find the post to clarify. Anybody know for sure?

ABSOLUTELY TRUE.

Its been parroted around here for a long time, and then Dexwithers (a dealer here) reached out to a gun bluing manufacturer to confirm. They explicitly/adamantly stated NO to using it for food prep. There are a few threads in recent months about it where I linked the thread if you want to dig around for it.

But yes, absolutely its true. Now, if its poisonous enough to kill you/bother about it "may" be up to the user, but its for sure not healthy, particularly over extended use. Something about selenium poisoning.

And I must say, after joining three and a half years ago, its nice to see you post for once (welcome! :)).

And OP, congrats on the new steel. Looks like you had a great time out there .

Looks great, and its even food safe . What did you use to force it?

Patinas show the same type of wear that bluing does, so at least that portion of what you liked about bluing should still remain the same. In fact, patinas build up and wear off over time, depending on the type of use. Its kind of fun to look at it and say "ah yes, that bit and color came from that delicious meat we had last campout" and things like that.

And sorry if I came off strong in my first post, I just would hate for anyone to get sick because of something like that, so I tried to be "very" clear what the answer was :/.

Cheers!

I really enjoyed this thread. I stripped my 7 too, used vinegar for the patina. I got to get some of that grip tape. Also, I am with ocnLogan with the "What did you use to force it?" question.

Awesome thread, thanks for sharing!

Glad to see a 7 being put to good use. Dont see it as often as some of the other Beckers, especially in the woods.

Hey YellowSwiss......

This is a great post!!!!!..... A little knife porn, a mod or two....... Good bush skills on display and meat for the pot...... All in a lovely setting...... I could smell that Red Cedar on the fire....... Does it get much better ??????......

Thank you for taking me along and the kind words about my blades....... You and people like you make it all worthwhile......
