• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

BK7 for desert survival! Badwater Walkabout- 135 miles across Death Valley

Thanks for the clips. I'd be interested in knowing why the guy chose the BK-7 (and not just a stock one, either - I believe those are micarta scales on the knife) rather than, say, a small machete.

Thanks for the link, great clips and great trip. I hail from the PNW (PSW in Canada lol), but I love the desert. Went down to Palm Springs last year, and spent a few day trips bummin around in Joshua Tree and the surrounding desert...even though I'm a cold-blooded Canadian, I LOVED it. There's just something about the desert, so much life, so many things hiding under every rock and bush...and everything wants to kill, stab, maim, or otherwise harm you. My kinda environment. I plan on doing alot more desert-survival training, but by the third day I had acquired enough books and local knowledge to identify a good portion of the plants, and even wove some yucca-fiber cordage.

The BK7 is a GREAT survival knife. Long enough to chop and poke things from a distance (scorpions...cactus lol) but is still lightweight and works great for upclose, fine work. The Micarta handles are probably the things to have in a hot, sweaty place like the desert, where grivory might become a little slick, especially without gloves. Also, black grivory could end up getting pretty hot if left in the sun for too long...
