BK7 or BK9?

Hello everyone,

I recently acquired a BK2 Campanion, haven't had a chance to really run it through the gauntlet, but, wow, is it ever a beefy knife. I'm bringing it on my camping trip up north, so if I get a chance, I'll take some digital pics of it "in the wild".

This brings me to my dilemma. I am definately going to be buying another BK&T, however, budget only allows for one before my camping trip :( So, my question is, which big brother to go with? The BK7 or the BK9? I have to admit, the prospect of a "quick" 9" combat bowie is enticing to some deep set primal need, but I'm not entirely sure it is required...then again if I have space for a 7", I guess I have space for a 9"

I read the threads on BK1 vs. BK9 but haven't really found anything that compares the BK7 and BK9, so anyone with experience in both, your input would be appreciated.

Regards,

Shaun.

If I had the companion allready I would go with the bk9, afterall you allready have a nice modest sized "small fixed blade". The bk9 will give you much more chopping power (leverage, ect.)!! The bk7 is good mid size, but since you have the smaller companion I would strongly consider the bk9. A bk7 can be a chopper, but the bk9 is much better for this purpose. This is just my personal opinion though.

I have both the BK 7 and the BK 2 and find that I rarely carry or use both knives at the same time. In fact I've been using my BK 7 quite a bit more than the Campanion. I find the 7" bladed knife to be easier (at least for me) to carry and use for "cross over" type tasks, or tasks that would normally be used with a smaller or larger knife than either my BK 2 or my CS Trailmaster. I have yet to have to chop anything since receiving the BK 7 (during both camping/backpacking and Army FTXs) that would would have required a longer blade. I also have found the BK 7 to perform a little better than the shorter and thicker blade of the Campanion in doing camp kitchen chores and such. I dont think you could go wrong with either. And at the current prices from 1SKS.com you could buy both.

I agree with John. I have a BK-7 and it will chop and can be used for utilitarian use and if I had to only chose one to start with I would choose the BK-7. But since you already have the campanion go for the BK-9 and you should have it all covered. For the price I plan on owning all three (have BK-7, getting the BK-9,and BK-10). Good camping and please do take some pics and share with use...

Well, I believe I made my decision, I'm going to get the BK9. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Shaun.

[EDIT]

Make that I have ordered my BK9 :) Cheers!

Now that you have a BK-9 on-order, and you already have a BK-2, next you are going to have to get a BK-1 to go along with your BK-2, and then a BK-10 to go along with your BK-9.:D.

...All I need now is a BK-10.:).
