BK7 or what else for a woods knife?

I love the 7. You can't go wrong with it. Its a great multi-use blade.

listen to UCPOPO, he's had dozens, if not hundreds of 7s by now :) :D (just giving ya crap bro in a loving way :>)

it's a great knife. it's not MY favorite, but i have a LOT of choices... but i have one on tap, at all times :)

Haaaa.....funny you should say that. Its actually the first Becker I ever purchased and the ONLY one I haven't sold and had to repurchase again. :D

hey, a whole lot of folks have gotten great deals because of whatever disease you have that makes you buy and then sell, only to re buy again. I'll never judge you.

you already have a good small knife for fine work in the ESEE4 -- I'd be looking at the BK9 or Junglas for your big knife and wood processing needs.
The 7 is great for "only one knife" applications, but the bigger blades will be safer when working on 6" logs, will give you more gripping area when using it as a draw knife, etc -- without adding that much more weight. (especially if you hang it on your pack and not your belt)

the esee six is an awesome blade it has nerver failed me i have beaten it though some really really hard eucalyptus that sometimes my pic axe can cut its bent at least 30 degrees and comes out strait as an arrow every time, it is surprisingly easy to use for the finer stuff the coil really helps and it holds it edge for a long time

i have never had a becker always wanted one sure it would do just fine as well!! but based from xp i would say the esee 6!!

5 7 or 10. You'd be happy with either one me things, but the 10 is smaller than what you're looking for.

Cool. I appreciate all the insight and advice from those who get out there an use all these options :)

Actually, I was thinking that, if I am bringing the 7, I'd leave the ESEE-4 at home. I'd couple the 7 with an Izula and maybe a folder for the little work.

I'm easing into this "big-blade" stuff, so I'm steering away from the 9 for now. I don't expect to do much chopping with the 7.

As far as having difficulty finding small wood... yes, that is when I am camping on snow. Sometimes 8-10 feet of the white stuff. The only wood you can find is the stuff sticking up out of the snow.

I'm just saying it's possible that I could need to split some wood at below freezing temps. It would be unlikely and it would not be done on 6" logs. I have looked at hatchet options, but the extra weight for each step of the hike outweighs the energy savings over a bit of batonning.

I like the BK9.

I hope the 7 works well... I ordered it :o

Nothing wrong with the 9 but, to me, it seems a little larger than I "need". I want to save weight anywhere I can and I like the more pointed tip of the 7 for tip-work. I also just like the blade-handle proportions. If I was going to go bigger than the 7, I think I'd get something with a 12" blade, something that can really hack.

Some of you guys have said that the 7 is a compromise. I do agree, but I kinda feel like the 9 is a bigger compromise for my needs. It is heavier, probably a little less suitable for finer work, and more specialized towards chopping work. I just don't swing my blades very much :)

The Izula and Eskabar are both excellent companion knives - especially if you get the full size aftermarket scales.
another option to carry with the 7 would be a SAK forrester or 1 hand trekker.

I am seriously looking at the Eskabar. My only reservation is that the handle is shorter than I'd like. I'd love an Eskabar with the Izula II handle - an Eskabar II. Maybe I can carve some wood handles for it, to make it fit better? I've never done anything like that, but I'm pretty handy.

Kinda sounds like my situation being a ratpacker 1st and I chose the 7 as my 1st Becker and love it. And as you said I usually pair it with my Izzy or a small folder like a spyderco dragonfly or slippie. Congrats on your purchase look forward to your thoughts on it buddy.

Izzy 2 handle is just about perfect.
an Escabar 2 would be a 3/4 size tweener -- sweet, but not likely to happen.
i put scales on my Esky and it's a LOT more comfortable than using it with just a wrap.

Ive partnered a vic forrester with my 7 for the past 2 years... Unbeatable combo for versatility imo

What should I get to fill the role of an Eskabar with a slightly longer handle? Is that the best option, and then just make a special handle myself?

What are these Tweeners that I am reading about? I have looked last night, but I don't find any pics or specs.

you could make a handle for it?
the tweeners are the next gen knives -- smaller: 4" drop point (mini-camp), 4" clip point, and 5" mini magnum camp -- with totally different handle shape. They should be out at the SHOT show in January and estimated pricing is around the $50 mark.
Check out the "naming contest" thread for pictures.

Hmmm... nobody recommended the Ritter/Becker RSK MK II? A true 'tweener' in that in blade length it fits between the BK-10 and the BK-7. It's not a Ka-Bar, but it is a Becker and an excellent design that may be just what you are looking for.

The ESEE Izula II is what you want. Has a little longer handle then the regular Izula/eskabar.

The tweeners are knives in the 4-5 inch range that won't be realeased until January and IMO are completley useless if you're already carrying a BK7.
