Alright, I have each of these knives and am trying to decide which would be better for camp/wilderness use. I know that some people feel that a smaller knife is more approporiate, so please don't suggest something different. I'm just trying to see who has used both and prefers one or another. Thanks!!

Just take them both out for a day, use them both and take lots of pics for us to see, then let us know what you like.

does your BK have the original plastic grips or micarta? the RAT7 is more comfortable to me as I have both blades as well...but I like both blades equally....I alternate between both blades as keepers in my truck....

Good advice Liam, I may have to do that!

It is 1095.

I have the D2 version and it is a pretty good perfomer, though I hear the 1095 version is better suited for "hard use" such as chopping and batoning.

Unfortunately, it has the original plastic grips. I would love micarta, but am not sure where to get them.

I would have to say the BK7 might just be slightly tougher, but I have used both and they are equally great knives.

i did some looking at my brothers bk7 and upon removing the handle discovered it was skeletonized. he likes the knife but i would find that dissapointing in a hard use knife if i owned it. rats seem to be more solid in my estimation.

Hey J D,

My understanding is that skeletonized tangs have essentially equal the strength as a solid tang but with substantial weight savings. Several engineers have pointed this out on blade forums in the past. The skeletonizing of the tang would change the balance point, however. That may have been one of the intended outcomes of the design in addition to weight.

Sorry I don't have either knife but would like to be an owner :)

the original grips on the BK,some folks keep survival gear inside of them, but then you'd hafta carry an allen wrench with you as well.

The last time I talked to Justin about micarta grips for my BK7, it was about $20 I think. That was over a year ago, however, and his price may have gone up. Not to mention my memory may be faulty...

just google whatever color you're after (ie green micarta scales, black micarta scales) you'll get plenty of results.

after owning both and using such.... i ended up being partial to the becker...the wonderful thing about knives is that there are so many to choose from...use the poop out of both of them, make your mind up on which one you like...i did and it was fun.
