I'm THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSS close to pulling the trigger on a BK9.

I currently run a BK2 and Kabar Kukri. Works well, BK2 for various small tasks and Kabar Kukri for chopping, etc.

The Kabar Kuk isn't good for much else though....where as the BK9 seems like it can do just about everything.

SPECIFICALLY as it relates to chopping though....BK9 vs Kabar Kukri?

How would either of those stack up to a 18 inch Ontario?

That kukri is a good blade, but the versatility of the 9 is dang hard to beat. I'm not gonna say the 9 will win in a chopping contest, but it will deffinately hold its own. The 9 matched with the 2 is a hard combo to best. Not much help, but all I got lol.

I'm not sure if you're speaking of the kukri 'machete' or combat version... I have the 'machete' version and this thing gets the job done. There is plenty of space to place your hand over the spine for drawing and scraping motions. I personally find this handy. This thing is lite too. For $44.60 (to your door) on Amazon, you can't beat it.

I'm referring to the machete version, like yours.

Yeah, it's super awesome in chopping, etc....just nothing else.

BK9. Hands down.

Lemme expound on what makes it better.

Will the BK9 out chop the Kuk? Hell no, not a chance. The Kuk has weight, size, angle, and grind that will whip the BK9 in chopping, everytime.

Will the Kuk out "knife" the BK9? Hell no, not a chance. The BK9 is a knife, 1095CV with an RC of about 58-59, and is made to work as a knife, that can chop, but can carve as well. You'll need to work on your technique to get proficient at it, but trust me, it will work for just about any task in front of it.

BK9-Made in USA
Kuk-Made in Taiwan (well made though)

That's about all I gots to say on it, and if you're wondering, I own both, and use both.

Gotcha! Makes sense. Did you do any modifications to your Kuk? Change the grind at all?

Nope. I changed the handle from black to Kabar Toxic green.

Its a high, grind, making for a stout edge, and good chopper.

Remember, its a machete, RC of around 52-54 made from 1085. All good stuff, but when something says machete, its usually because of the low RC.

Had my BK9 for a couple years of camping trips and beating on it like the $20 pakistani bowie I had before. It's my favorite knife and does most everything well. Like the .30-06 of knives. Pair it with a good multi-tool or SAK and you're pretty much set.

I've had the 9 for a couple of years and just got the kuk in trade, if I had to take only one it'd.be the 9 everytime. Moose, sorry to derail but I'm assuming you know how the tang attaches to the handle seeing as you swapped yours out, is it the lanyard hole that's a pin?

The tube that serves as a lanyard hole goes through the tang and locks the handle onto the knife.

Moose is right and Moose is wise. I owned both for a while and the Kabar Kuk Machete is a super duper chopper, I kept my BK9 and gave my Kukri Machete to a buddy that needed something like that. It's a great tool and I wouldn't just give it to anyone but the BK9 is the one still in my possession.

Listen to the Moose; he knows whereof he speaks. Small correction though, Moose. The BK-9 is Rc of 56-58. A little softer than Camillus made them, but a LOT tougher. That's still 4 Rc points harder than the machete's 52-54. But if we don't try to chop rocks, and use a synthetic stone instead of a cheap file to resharpen, the edge on KA-BAR's 1095CV will stay sharp a long time. I will wait patiently for the Patrol Machete; maybe I'll be able to afford it by the time it comes out.
