I posted this on BCUSA awhile back. I thought you folks might find in interesting.
Last winter I was out on an overnight backpack. Its January and I’m in North western PA. so it’s cold snowy and wet. After I got my shelter set up I started working on collecting and prepping wood for a fire. After batoning through some hemlock I started to stand so I could grab some more wood. Of course I was lazy, and didn’t sheath my knife. While I was standing my foot sliped in the snow, and the blade lightly touched my knee. I knew I was cut but it didn’t really hurt. I stuck two of my fingers through the slice in my pants, and my thermal layer was soaking wet. I pulled my fingers out, and they were covered in blood. I then excused myself, and quickly retreated to my tarp. Then I grabbed the FAK, and opened my pant leg to see what I was dealing with. It wasn’t to bad but it was still a little nasty. I flushed it with an iodine solution. It was only 20 degrees so I didn’t flush it as well as I would have liked. I closed the wound with steri-strips, and used benzoin tincture to aid adhesion. I then covered everything up with a piece of 3X3 gauze.
Everything held together during the walk out in the morning, and heeled up fine.
