I finally decided to get out and break in my new BK-9.
This one was a prize from one of Ethan's Challenges, and since it is a gift knife, it won't leave my possession. Ergo, it becomes a user.
What follows are some step-by-step photos that document the initial use.

Here's a nice box from Ka-Bar.

And look! Inside there's some stuff!

All pretty and pristine. Any specks you see are raindrops. Fit and finish on this knife is excellent.

The first chop was fun.

I did some batoning with the knife at first. This pic shows how wood grain can torque a long blade pretty easily. The BK9 took it in stride though.

Here's a nice pile of kindling I amassed with the BK9 and a baton log.

I decided to examine the Grivory grip by bare-handed stabbing the blade repeatedly into the chopping stump. Verdict? There's nothing wrong with Grivory's grip.

Then, I decided to go the extra mile and wet the handle. I whipped out my wetter and peed all over the.... :D

No seriously, I used spit. Gross as that may seem to some, spit is slick and retains some viscosity like blood. Stabbing with the spitty handle, I had no problems with slippage.

Then, it was time for some chopping. I grabbed a piece of hard, seasoned pecan off the pile. It was 3.5" diameter.

The BK9 made pretty short work of it. Here's a shot just before the final chops.

And here's the completed task.

Oh! But what's this in my pocket? A set of micarta scales and an Allen wrench? Who knew?

In setting down the knife, I noticed it rattled a bit. The reason? The screws were loose.

As you can see here, there's very little LocTite on the screws, so my advice is to tighten those screws on the new knives. Maybe even add some LocTite.

Here's the BK9 decked out with new scales.

I went back to chopping again, and hacked my way through the same pecan log.

Here's the BK9 showing a little love in the sweet spot afterwards.

Great knife. Thanks to Ethan and Moose for the contest, and thanks to Ethan for the prizes and the privilege of using his designs.

I wanted to use real blood, but Moose has already gotten to all the spotted owls in my neighborhood.

Hey, the owls were asking for it, OK!?!?!

Nice pics, brother, that sure looks like some fun. That 9 is a great, great knife.

I was sitting here at the desk wondering about edge retention after that round of batoning and choppping.

Let's just say I lost a big swath of arm hair. Nothing wrong with that heat treat best I can tell.

I also lopped a piece of printer paper clean in two with one swipe.

After chopping with both grips, which do you like best? I've done quite a bit with my stock grips and really like them. No hot spots at all.

It's about six one way, half a dozen the other. Both were comfortable. If presented with a gun to my head, I'd go micarta, in part because I have a bit of a micarta fetish, but also because I like the warmer feel of the material.

On the BK9, the micarta does add a little more weight to the handles, which can be a good thing on that knife. It's already a weight forward knife with the long blade and skeletonized tang. I didn't really try and feel for balance today, but it's something I'll contemplate later.

I had originally thought about replacing the handles on my Ritter Perseverance, but I think I'm going to leave those stock, since they'll work better with that fancy weight system.

What a nice test. Great pictures. I like the bk9, it appears to be the best chopper. I like it, but i can´t give an use here . So i prefer bk2.

Oh geeez, now you went and got it all scratched up:D Looks like you had a fun day with the BK-9 today. Here's to many more.

Guyon, Looks like you were having a good time. I like when people post pictures of their knvies and them using them, it puts a picture to the words. Congrats on breaking in the new knife man. Enjoy!

Mmmmm. Micarta. I'm juuuuuuust about ready to pull the trigger on a set, but I'm waiting to see if I decide to off my ESEE-5 in favor of a BK-2 (so I'd need 2 sets of micarta slabs haha)..

I bet that was fun....after all we're big boyz and we like our toyz.

After you replaced the scales with micarta ones, are the screws still coming loose during use?

No, I snugged them up when I put on the micarta, and they were fine. As a precaution, however, I'll put some purple (low strength) Loctite on the threads before I take the knife afield.
