Bk9 convex saber- my 2nd Becker thread

Don't get me wrong, I may still buy the knife. It costs next to nothing and would be worth it just to try. I'm always open to learning that my pre-conceived notions are wrong, especially if it means I can be happy without spending much money. I was just wondering if there were other suggestions of knives that would fit. The remora is tiny and I'm having a little trouble finding a replacement of same dimensions.

Yes and no. If the grind was right for what I want to do with the knife then the steel would be less important. I don't want my small knife to be relegated to cleaning fish and small game and I don't want to have to constantly touch up the edge. I want to be able to do wood working and trap work as well with harder woods like oak and maple. I prefer harder woods for traps because you can use thinner pieces without losing strength. If it were flat ground I could back the edge up and convex it to make it more efficient but the thin hollow grind does not have enough behind the shoulders to let me reprofile it to make up for the soft steel.

I can agree with that.

The Remora though, is not really, IMO, gonna be a good wood worker. Its just too small. Its only about as long as your finger, and since it has a hollow grind, I put it in the meat, soft tissue category. There isn't enough handle there to promote "force" cuts, but, holding it like a good filet cutter, feels perfect to me. I would prefer my BK14 or BK11 for they type of work you are talking about.

Wow thanks, I read the description but it never really hit me just how small it was. In that case I'll order one now, brb...

I guess that is my biggest issue, that is, what else would even fit? It really is tiny, maybe a really small sharpening stone?

Btw, how are the inserts held in place? The big one seems like it is sewn into the sheath and the small one seems to be that way too.

Just ordered it, should be here early next week.
My eskabar and Bk2 should be here tomorrow!

I'm getting a Eagle Industries sheath for my BK2 today, I can't wait, this will be the first time I have made a sheath kit for my BK2. The most awesome, gets more awesomer.

Sweet. The bk2 is tempting, though I think I rather have something along the lines of the bk10/12. Though I haven't used a bk2 enough to say for sure. Will be fun though, new knives are always fun to get.

HEY! this is a kids show:D

Kids show? I better go edit my previous posts....brb.

Yeah, I'm VERY tempted to pull the trigger on the 12. I like the blade shape with the higher grind a lot but I don't know if its worth the price (for me) without a handle upgrade. I don't consider the "Black Glass Reinforced Swiss GV6H" enough of a change and would prefer micarta.

Same here. Not sure how much the BK10's go for. Then again, if the knife is exactly what you want and can really use it, the cost may not be the biggest deal. Could sell something else I suppose. Will wait for the catalog for anything else at this point, except some more micarta. :D

You got a link, I would love to check it out....

had a little dirt time with the bk9 today. No camera while I was out due to rain but after a full day of HARD chopping and battoning, as well as cutting a LOT of carpet, the edge still slices paper well. The blade is scratched up a bit but it will clean up easily. It doesn't shave anymore but it still slices paper cleanly! I could have it shaving hair in a couple minutes with a strop, no problem. This knife was use by myself and two other guys and was stropped on my jeans a couple times but no other edge maintenance was performed. We beat this knife hard and I am VERY impressed with the edge retention and durability.
