bk9 is thinner now?

... go with 1/4 inch which WOULD wreck the balance and functionality of both blades...

hey... how about a 1/4 inch thick knife then :)

I KNOW, a 1/2 inch thick knife. the power! the glory! my shoulder! :)

Being a man who loves a thick blade (as i unfortunately am forced to really abuse my knives, i have had several made of 3/8" stock S7 and H13, trading edge-holding for edge strength), i was also concerned when i heard one of my favorite knives of all time, the BK9, would be made thinner. Then i considered that 1095 is generally a lot tougher than 50100B (0170-6C) (heat-treat and all other things being equal) and especially with a little more shallow grind, i'd bet the new thinner blade would chop better, having (potentially) a thinner edge and less resistance than a fractionally thicker blade. And i'm guessing the new one will withstand more lateral flex -- i can't wait to see someone break one of each in a controlled flex-test... I'd try it but i'm too broke to do anything more than own one of each and use them until the coating is worn off the blades -- I'm thrilled that your knives are still available, Mr. Becker. Great blade designs.
Now does anyone know if the Campanion is changing thickness? 'Cause i wouldn't mind having one of those in .25" 1095....

I want one! It would be fun to see how a knife that thick felt in use (besides HEAVY). Not a khukri, which i know are sometimes made that thick, but something like a Rio Grande Bowie... Hmmmm...

I don't think the thinner blades will be an issue. 1095CV, especially the way Ka-Bar does it, should be well more than tough enough even if it is a little thinner.

I would still like to see something bigger though (something that would compete with the Scrapyard Dogfather). A Becker with ten inches of quarter inch thick steel and a full flat grind, that would be something else.
Another run of Kuhkri's would be more likely though, and I'd be just fine with that.

One of the things I like about the Ka-Becker Bk9 is that it feel more lively in the hand. It also fits my hand better, with the grips feeling slightly slimmer (maybe due to the slightly thinner blade). So far, I like the new version a lot. I still need to hack through some more stuff, but so far, so good.

A thiner blade will cut better anyway. And if it does break they will replace it wouldn't they? It almost sound to me like an improvement

Was there some reason you decided to resurrect a 5 year old thread?

The Ka-bar BK9 is indeed a fine piece, and Ka-bar CS is superb.

Old thread or not, I got some learning in. I had actually been wondering about it. And having answers from Mr. Becker himself is not only awesome, but insightful.

I love when an old thread is bumped up. This one is like a time capsule.
Folks are freaking out about a change in a "new" production.
Now 5 years down the road all we hear, is the 9 is king, and you can't not have a 9.

Mr Becker and Ka-bar knew what they were doing after all.

LMAO!!!!!

Necrothread!!!!! Shoot it in the head!!!!!

That rhymed btw.
