BK9 (or any other BK if it fits...) Non-Scientific Poll

Good point on the use...never thought of that. Might be another thread idea! Second good point...is there a way to know if a Becker knife is closing production?

1) I like to have my thumb directly behind the blade for fine work; so I'm tempted to deramp. That said, I'm also scared of all of that blade (I have flashes of 2 nasty 'I'll use my machete as a walking stick' hand wounds I've seen). Although I don't think I've ever stabbed anything with my BK9 (except for fun), the thumb ramp is a nice safety blanket. I wish it were moved up the blade a bit. My hands are too big for it's current location. Maybe that would weaken things at a vital spot though. I seem to remember photos of roll-stamped versions snapping at the end of the handle.
2) I'm sure the blade works better sans coating. It also rusts. I'm letting mine wear off... at the current rate, that will take about 10 years.
3) Factory micarta is divine.
4) The stock sheath is pretty good actually (2017 model). I'm gonna keep it until it starts to wear out. ...maybe changing out the current plastic insert for some snappy Kydex.
5) Pack. With a BK24 around my neck.

1) either or.
2) either or. i keep the whole thing lightly lubed for the wear spots.
3) i had the micarta delivered mistakenly, when i'd ordered the scales for my bk11. thought about keeping them, but returned them. grivory's fine by me.
4) stock sheath, under my wife's car seat.

Just trying to figure this out from the pictures I've seen here...

1. Thumb-ramp or No Thump-ramp?
2. Blade Coating or No Blade Coating?
3. Factory Grips or Non-Factory Grips?
4. Factory Sheath or Custom Sheath?

Did I miss any...?
1. Makes no difference to me
2. On a chopper...makes no difference to me
3. Good to go, no need to spend money on replacements from a function standpoint
4. Fine for pack or car, for belt carry I would prefer a smaller, shorter profile with friction fit so you don’t have to mess with a retention strap and snap. Big pain if using the knife a lot, in and out of the sheath.

I have no need for the thumb ramp and like to put my thumb there so I vote no. It is easy to work around but I would rather not have it.

I do not like coatings on any knife. I remove them all right away.

The micarta grips look nice and feel good. The grivory works just fine and I prefer the light weight and smooth texture. I think that with great ergonomics texture is not needed and a smooth finish is less apt to cause blisters so I vote factory scales. I don’t like to wear gloves.

Factory sheaths work ok. I put larger knives in my pack so carryability means very little to me. I mostly stopped strapping things to the outside of packs long ago. In the winter my sleeping bag and bed roll go on the outside because they are so bulky and I need more clothes in the pack. Knives never go on the outside though. I have lost too much stuff. Kydex does have the benefit of being less bulky in the pack than stock. I do wear the factory sheath when doing yard work and for that it works fine.

This is how it is for me as well. I put knives in the pack too. Very rarely have one on my side, as I use my knives at the cabin mostly.
