BK9 or Machax, chopping and clearing

The Tram is one of my favorite machetes.

The 9 is... well... THE KING.

i actually have been considering getting a laplander for my BOB, i have used one and they are great at large sawing jobs. if i was making a permanent shelter that would be key. or anytime i care if the ends are cut nicely. but for me personally i enjoy chopping thru stuff.

I own both the 4 and the 9... The 4 is maybe a little more versatile... It can do smaller knife tasks well as well as being a decent chopper, draw knife, etc...

The 9 definitely beats the 4 in chopping power. It's heavier with a more acute blade angle so it bites deeper. Batoning is easier with the 9 due to the straight edge. The 4 can baton... it's just a little more of a pain in the butt...

If you want a single knife to get you by... the 4 may have an edge... if you want a chopper to pair up with a smaller knife like a 16 or 14... get the 9.

I would have no problem assigning the Laplander to a new hiker/camper and sending them off a short ways in search of firewood or saplings to make poles for a shelter...the BK9...not so much...Many hands...light work.

There was a member that posted about his success with a Stanley wide set tooth hand saw...but that takes us down a different trail from your original question.

I love my laplander. I got it on a whim without knowing about all the excellent reviews and suggestions. I was looking at something like the sawvivor originally.... definitely glad I went with the laplander. GREAT little saw. 2

Using Amazon: A BK9, a spiffy Mora and the Laplander would be to your door for around $120.

yea but this isnt for me ill probably just do a gift certificate like advised and give him a not so gentle push towards a bk9!

My actual camp combo now is my bk11 and my ontario sp8 this replaced my old s&w m&p knife and a hatchet. next ill add a bk9 and then preferably a used bk2 from someone here. I have a bk2 coming from Ethan (thanks Moose) but it will be special, ill have to get me a user. I normally only get 1 or 2 new toys a month so this will take a few? months but then my camp combo will be pretty fantastic if i say so myself.

Both knives will get the job done for sure. I have both. But whenever I have clearing (or wood processing of any kind) to do, I always grab my machax.

Say Heah Boys and Girls and a Happy Father's Day to both Dad's and Single Women that are Mom's and Dad's. When I found out about the CarbonV Steel, I bought almost the whole line of Beckers BK's. I have the BK-9 and the BK-4. The BK-9 is a little thicker and offers a little heavier punch when chopping in my opinion. But as a long knife, or a camp clearing knife, The BK-4 shines. Don't get me wrong, I can chop with the BK-4 but the BK-9 is just a little better. I can build a shelter using both, But when I know I will be processing more wood on a extended Trio, besides a axe's, and saw, I bring my BK-9 and BK-10 along. Off couch I like my Mora 510 as my neck knife, But I also like my BK-14 with slabs too. I put together a nice Lite Set, I teamed my BK-4 and my BK-5, I can also add my BK-15 to the mix. But now there are two new kids on the block. Since I have three Khukuris/Kukuri, But I like large Bowie Choppers, I went with the BK-20first and then I'm buying the BK-21. The BK-9 next to the BK-20 is much smaller, Imagine that. And the BK-20 is sold as a package deal, I already have the BK-4&5. but the two come as a package deal with the BK-20 which I don't mind because I like them both. Infact I like my BK-5 a little better than my BK-7, and I can do with it everything I can with my BK-7 and their both the same thickness, but lighter. If you just want either or. The BK-9 or tge the BK-4, having both I would go with the BK-9, because it's Simply a great chopper. But if you want more versatility, by all means, the BK-4 will NOT disappoint you.

Wow!
GODSPEED and CTanner posted...
...necro indeed. Lol

I'd still rather roll with a Machax in the woods.
Long live the 2012 threads!!!

Say Heah again, Yup, when I bought my BK-4, I bought it as a chopper, When my BK-9 chopped much better, I used it more and the BK-4 was idle. Then I got into using long knives to clear through the Rough brush, Then the light went on. It is called a Machaxe, so I said why not. I took it out to clear through some brush, and a new tool was born for me. No, I don't think it will replace my Johnson Adventure Parangatang or my all time Fav my Rodent Rucki, With the Rucki, I can chop, baton and use it as a knife because of the choil, and I can use it to process alot of wood with it. The Parangatang has a longer reach and I like that, But the Machaxe has a notch, I do use it to clear through some rough brush, I can baton with it and it chops but it's not the best chopper, But neither are some of my large knives but I use them as large knives. The same with the BK-4 now, You see, I looked at it as a chopper only, Then to clear through the Rough stuff I like a little longer tool but not too long, And bingo, Put all that together and as a large knife, The BK-4 shines. Yes it can clear, yes it can choose, What I missed was I never used it as a knife, and it surprised me how well it slices and how I can do the fine stuff with it, I can make notches, even pot holders, and slice off bark off a stuck. I sort of enjoy finding out how I can use it, instead of just looking at it as a chopper or a too short machete, But it's a well rounded large knife that only looks different. Anyhow, Y'all have a Happy and Safe 4th of July.
