BK9 - poor QC

I've had a couple of the Camillus/Becker BK9, and both were perfect. I'll have another one on the way from "New Graham Knives" today or tomorrow, and I'll report on it as soon as I receive it.

I've also owned a handfull of other "BK" knives, and I didn't notice any problems with any of them...It looks like you have received that one that went past QC while he/she was glancing at something else.
As an update...I received my BK9 today. I've looked it over carefully, and it is pretty much perfect.:).

If a knife is $60 or $600, I'm not willing to accept more or more serious defects. I am willing, however, to accept a thick black coating (which I like anyway) to cover a rough finish, or slightly off grinds, etc. I'm not willing to accept things like blued edges from grinding too fast, etc.

Now, I have several Beckers, and their spine isn't quite perfectly (it's close, though) lined up with the handles, which I would expect on a custom knife. That's perfectly fine with me, as others have posted, when I'm through chopping and cutting, they are going to look a whole lot uglier than the factory could make them. Of course, to me, they're a whole lot purtier, because now they have character and each blemish that I put in is now a memory of good times with the blade.

I'll give the Beckers one thing - a truly fantastic steel. These knives hold an edge like there's no tomorrow, and they're easy to either steel back or sharpen back if need be. I am constantly amazed that they aren't priced 2 to 3 times higher. I have really put mine through the wringer, and they are my "go to" knives when I'm hiking. I know that I can rely on them.

They aren't perfect, but I am very happy them overall.

i just purchased a BK-9 and it was beautiful (as much as it can be) right outta the box. i bought it as a user and have been beating the piss out of it. not abusing it, but using it. it chops very well and was spliting some cotton woods pieces very well. i think that you may just have some bad luck. i have known of a couple people who are that way. with the exception that they had "auto" issues that resulted in stitches.

sorry to hear your dissapointment, but i would give it another try before giving up on these knives. they are like a poor man's cadillac. they hold up well, do most intended jobs and don't make my wallet pucker. the maxx 5.5 is sweeeeet as well. :D

Just want to add something here. Last week I used my BK-9 to limb some branches from some trees I cut down in the back yard. Spent nearly 4 hours working with the knife and it performed great. It's amazing to me how well that thing can chop. Just for the fun of it, I cut through an 8 inch section of one of the trees. Only complaint is now I've got a blister, but swing anything for 4 hours and that will happen. Anyway, while doing all of this, I lost one of the screws from the handle. Earlier this week I sent an e-mail to Cammillus asking if I could get a replacement. They called me up this morning and asked where could they send a new set of screws. This is a great company that takes care of its customers, and the BK-9 is a hell of a work knife. Thanks Camillus!

 I took my new BK9 camping last weekend. Attended a basic wilderness survival class conducted by the State DNR. After the class Sun afternoon I collected firewood left by other campers who had cleared out as I wanted to attempt lighting a fire in the rain with no matches. The BK9, which arrived in perfect condition, split red oak logs better than a small hatchet. I shaved some of the pieces to make kindling, and wittled a few fuzz-sticks. After I got the fire going I examined the blade - it showed NO signs of wear...still shaving hair from my arm. It did have stains on the finish, but no coating was removed. It's going to be tough to talk myself into buying a Strider now!
