BK9 Sheath mod to fit BK11

I do believe that ask the big knife sheaths have one of those special sheath pockets.

I know the 7 and 9 do, but the sheath is the same style for the "22" and the 10. The 3 and 4 I'm not sure about though. But I'm pretty sure the 14 & 24 will fit, the strap might just not a touch to short. You could cut it though, the retention on mine is super strong, and I wouldn't worry about it falling out at all.

Dang it! This mod won't work for the BK5 sheaths!

I have 2, one with an old style sheath with no molle straps on back, one new style with molle straps, and both have the little sheath in the outside pocket. But I could not get my BK24 inserted no matter how hard I tried.

Instead of having to mess with a pot and suspending the knife, I used a 2-cup Pyrex measuring cup and microwaved the water then inserted the knife. The water never exceeded 212°F (naturally) and the glass never exceeded 200°F. I let the 24 sit in the hot water for as much as 3 minutes and it never exceeded 140°.

Unfortunately, I could never get it to go more than ~1.5" no matter how hard I pushed. (Yes, I was careful.)

I finally got a flashlight to see what, if any, progress the hot blade was making inside the sheath. Surprise, surprise!

The sheath is restricted inside! While the opening is a good 1.5", about 1.25" down the opening is sharply reduced to only about 1" by thicker plastic, about .25", on either side. I don't see how a hot knife will cut through all that plastic.

Hmmm ... could these inserts have been redesigned since this mod was first done back in 2012?

Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you :(. My 9's sheathe doesn't have a molle backing, if that helps place it chronology at all (got it from tomarskabars in late 2011 iirc).

From what I recall, I hit that point as well (more accurately, what must have been that, thinking back on it now). I do recall a "pop" or noise and then it getting easier from there on out. That point was about half the blade length in iirc, which sounds just about right. I do remember having to push pretty good to get it through that point, but didn't feel like I was giving it all I had or anything like that.

So yeah, maybe the sheath changed? Maybe the pot method transferred more heat to the knife and it melted/softened the plastic better? Maybe I'm secretly the hulk?

I guess you could try my method (boiling, taking of heat for like 30sec, leaving it in there for minute or so, repeat) and checking the temps with your fancy gizmo there to make sure it never goes over 300 or so(which sounds easy actually). Another option is un-stitch it, take it out, cutt off the bottom, then sew it back in?

I took a closer look at the inner sheath. It's not a rectangle but in a T-shape. Top 1.4" x 1.5", bottom 1" x 2.5"

You can feel it if you squish around the nylon. I tried pulling it out but it is sewn in at the bottom.

Here's what the inside looks like from the top. You can see where my 24 bit into it.

If the inner sheath on the 9's sheath is also a T-shape then that "pop" you heard may have been the plastic sheath splitting open.

I suck at sewing so I'll have to think about that one. ;)

... fancy gizmo ...

Oh, that's my Q-36 explosive space modulator.

Once Christmas rolls around and the Misses isn't able to use that "they are gifts" excuse to keep holding them hostage from me, I will give it a shot on my 4 and 5.

Since this thread has been linked in another thread, I will update.
I have a newer styled 5 sheath with the molle backing and though the plastic sheath was "T" shaped, I was able to heat my 11 in a pot of near boiling water for around 20-30 seconds and that was sufficient for me to push it into the sheath.

I first pushed it as far as possible cold to get the most out of it, then I heated the blade and went at it again. I didnt feel a "pop" but I was able to get enough depth to feel secure about it. There is no blade showing, and the hump after the sharpening notch is also within the confines of the "inner sheath".

I also put a small hole in the strap for the bottle opener on the 11 to hook into to serve as a location securing device on the nylon strap.
