I got a local customer that wanted a BK9 M1 with a firesteel loop and a pouch for a DMT hone. Here's what he got. Its 12/13oz should cut leather:eek:, double stitched, waterproof inside and out, formed to a BK9, and tougher than any other sheath I have made, by far. The whole leather weight mixup has thrown a MAJOR wrench in the works. My customers that had standing orders get a boon, good for them, not for me. No additional charge for the thicker leather, but any new orders that come in, there will be a surcharge. At the firesteel loop, the sheath measure 7/8" thick, 4 layers there. Stitching this beast took over 2 hrs, and some very bruised thumbs and fingers, and 2 broken needles.

On average, my BK9 sheaths have about 130 stitches, but with the addition of the pouch, it got bumped up to 160. Three layer of this leather, is nearly 3/4" thick. My fingers hurt just typing that. :D:thumbup:

Bloody hell that's nice. I'd like to formally request more pictures of your works on leather as you complete them. How long have you been working leather like this?

very nice

may not want that much cordage on the fire steel - may get hung up in vegetation and pulled out of sheath

LMAO, thanks, but that my around the house, sheath fitting firesteel. My last count of the ones I have are 26, of various sizes. Thats one of 7 Rough Rider steels I got laying around.

I'll remember that, and shorten them up, but I use shock cord around my firesteels That head to the woods with me.

Thanks for the heads up.

About 14hrs now.

:D:D:thumbup:

Not very long, but I do make quite a few a month, though. Practice makes perfect.

are you sewing while the leather is still wet from forming?
if not, try that - I find that it helps me when I'm sewing multiple layers of 10oz or thicker.
(used to do a lot with 13-15 oz saddle skirting -- that stuff is brutal!)

Hey Moose, you got any pics of your Kydex work? As a future client, I am curious.

I do work with kydex, but, its not my favorite, just a "Hey, can you do kydex?" question I get alot. That, and it is really good stuff. One of the things I do with my kydex is put a piece of rubber tubing along the edge, so as not to allow the edge to come into contact with the kydex, and flare the back opening so it doesn't drag on the draw. Kydex vs Steel. Kydex wins?WTF?

If you want some badass kydex, Marion David Proff smokes my ass like a ham. Just sayin

Wow, sounds like good news for me - just sent Moose my payment for a BK2 sheath this week. Wanted mine plain - no firesteel loop. Looking forward to it!
