BK9, still the king?

Always the King.

No. It is no longer the King. The King is the United Cutlery partially serrated tanto commando bowie with hollow handle and bonus compass ring.

^^^This cracked me up.^^^

And next in our list to compete againest the BK9 king of chopper knives is the $19 Winchester Bowie from Wal-mart.

Man I hope that never happens. No, wait, I want to see it happen.

Why have just one?

And yes, two of these have plans for major modification! No reason for three identical ones.

Maybe even some de-ramping! :D

Bigskymt, evildick, I made that sheath. First the kydex then after a while decided to "frog" it. I also added a pouch for a tin can and rod

I bet u can chop the winchester clean thru with a 9

Zuluninja - Nice work on that sheath. I always like a leather + kydex combo.

If anybody decides to chop through a Walmart Winchester bowie, please wear the appropriate safety gear; eye protection, gloves, leather blacksmith's apron etc.
And PLEASE get it on video!!! I'd love to see the shards of Chinese steel go flying through the air as the 9 obliterates the inferior poser that is the Winchester Bowie.

ehhh. I'm a big knife guy, and I would consider the BK-9 mediocre in chopping ability. My ontario sp10 outchops it clearly. Not saying it's a bad knife, because chopping really isnt super important to me. It's still a kickass knife and my favorite becker.

Translash - Are you serious? I have an SP10 & it's more of a novelty knife than a serious piece of kit. I wouldn't say it's better than the BK-9 at anything that I've ever used it for.
But maybe that's just me....

Since I have a BK-9 and an SP-10, I decided to head out into the back yard to do a little chop off between them. I was curious.

I will say that the factory BK-9 will beat a factory SP-10 in chopping. The SP-10 comes from the factory with a godawful thick edge that isn't very sharp and isn't very efficient, while the factory 9's edge is much thinner and sharper. But I've done a lot of work on both knives, so now both have optimized, thinner edges.

And now for our contestants.

First up is the Baconator BK-9.

Next is the SP-10 Raider Bowie.

I found a well seasoned branch in the back yard to use as my victim. The wood is nice and hard. On other branches from this tree, I've had a hard time getting through the wood with hatchets, and knives seem to take for-freakin'-ever to get through it. I figured this branch could be a decent test of both knives abilities.

The rule is twenty chops each, as well as I can chop with a back injury from last week slowing me down.

First, the Raider Bowie. It's been Fisked and the swedge has been sharpened.

Now the Baconator. It's adorned with TKC G-10 scales and a boasts highly polished and sharp convex edge.

That wood was really hard, and I was working hard to bite into it. My back was screaming at me while I was doing this. Should have waited another week. But it looks like the SP-10 Raider Bowie gets the win on this one, but not by as much as I figured it would. I think the advantage is in the extra inch of blade, the weight, and the extremely huge and grippy handles. Tooj did a good job when he designed the Raider Bowie. It's a chopper (once you thin out the edge), even though I think the grippy handle would cause you to develop blisters if you tried to do a lot of chopping without gloves. I'd love to see the SP-10 done up in a FFG. It'd be a whole lot lighter and easier to carry, which is the area where the BK-9 shines.

that sp-10 looks nice with the sanded grind lines, good job!

The bk 9 would outperform the sp10 without reprofiling. I took the sp10 obtuse edge to 40 degrees all inclusive using a dmt stone and spider Co sharp maker and did the same to the bk9. Took them both out last March and used them pretty well. It wasn't a huge margin but the sp10 was the Better chopper from my experience. Not smashing on the bk9 though. I'm sure the bk9 is sturdier and more reliable.
