I ordered a TM SK5 after I saw nutn's review. Just got it - can't wait to try it out. Hell, its a lot of knife for the dough, no matter how you slice it! :p

in looking at the steels, it is more important to look at the heat treating than the steel as much as noted by ethan becker, the heat treating of the 1095 cv is a point lower but gives back more edge holding and less brittle edge than a harder heat treat, one of the sad things about the demise of camillus was the loss of the treating of the 0170 heat treat, camillus had it down, and one of the reasons that the becker knives were so successfull was that the steel heat treat were perfect for the intended blades, the blade desins were very compatable with the heat treat so the the package was very workable. i have heard a rummor that the original cold steel carbon 5 was just the same 0170 steel treated by camillus. again the knife and heat treat was great for these knives.

ethan has described how he and kabar have brought about using the 1095cv and the proper heat treatment to make a superlative blade, kabar has been using 1095 forever i am sure that they have learned how to maximize the use of this steel, i am glad that the becker knives will continue as they are great knives at great prices.

I have some Cold Steel knives, mostly those that were made by camillus. I have never had any major issues with my cold steel knives, but since they moved production to China, I would have to say I would look at the BK&T or RTAK II first.

That is just me, if you are okay with chinese made goods, I would take a serious look at the Kershaw Outcast, it is a real chopper. I bought it and used it before I looked at the box:( I seriously thought about taking it back when I saw "Made in China", but I had already beaten on it, and taking a bit of a liking to it.

Ethan I may be able to answer this as I've done the same to my Crewman and BK7. I don't recall who originally posted how to do it, but take a can of paint stripper, spray it on, remove the goo and do this several times. Once you do that just take a sander and work your way down in grits until you get the mirror finish. (Or in my case almost mirror finish. I still have some areas that aren't quite there yet.) I may take a picture later.

Joezilla will probably remember looking at my BK7 at PWYP this year. I never did show it to you cause I thought you wouldn't like it. :D

Hey Alex and cssims....

Ka-Bar really does have 1095CV down pat...They have been using it for forever and Paul has certain obsessive tendencies which I find extremely admirable.....

Cssims, I am VERY flattered that you thought enough of one of my ugly ducklings to make it into a swan...Very Nice.....Just keep on offending me like that and I'll owe you a beer at least !!!...

All Best...
