Hello, I want to purchase my first Becker Knife and cant decide which one between the BK9 / BK5 / BK7. I have watched tons of vides, read reviews, searched forums and still need help deciding. As of right now, it will be used doing yard work outside. Maybe cut a few branches here and there. I dont go camping or anything like that. From what i have seen, the prices are pretty similar. I know some of you will say "buy all of them" and who knows, i might down the road but for right now i need just one that i would like to have around. Thank you in advance.

If you don't go camping and want to use the knife around the house, I would say that the BK-5 or BK-15 would be perfect.

This ^^^. Absolutely. DO NOT be afraid to take the BK-5 or the BK-5 outside & chop some stuff with it. Then prepare dinner with it !

My BK5 has a dedicated drawer in the kitchen. Great knife! Superior slicer!
Seriously, since I've had my BK5, I rarely reach for the knife block. I reach for the BK5 9 times out of 10.
It's a very capable outdoors blade as well.
Out of the entire line, the BK5 is my favorite to use.

The BK9 is an awesome knife. Chopaholic! The King!
The BK7...some folks love it. For me, it's the only Becker I never fell in love with.
For an "around the house" knife, the BK5 gets a solid vote from me!

I use the BK5 around the house the most and the BK9 around the yard the most

I'll be honest, if you are looking for STRICTLY around the house. Get the kitchen knives. You get 4 and it is about the same price as any of the three you listed. Plus with them you will be able to handle ANYTHING in the kitchen.

The BK-5 is the goddess of butcher knives and my favorite knife ever. Compared to the BK-9:

BK-5:
- better slicer
- very agile and quick
- surprisingly lightweight for its size
- does alright at chopping but works better as a short machete
- despite the thinnish blade, it is tougher than it looks

BK-9:
- a bit heavier and has more percussion effect at chopping; much like a hatchet
- VERY stout and rugged

The BK-7 fills the same niche as the USMC "KaBar" knife but it is a much more durable design. IMO it's one of the most versatile jack-of-all-trades in the BK&T line-up.

another vote for the kitchen knives -- or get a 15, the 5's little brother.

Normally I'd say the BK9 is a must-own, but that really only applies to outdoorsmen. In your shoes I'd say BK7 I guess.

Love my 5. I use it in the kitchen every day. Getting a 9 for heavy duty stuff in the brush, but the 5 will still come out to play, too.

If by around the house you mean mostly kitchen stuff with a few light chores like cutting small branches---get the 5

If you will do more everyday chores with it and less kitchen stuff---get the 7 because you will still have kitchen knives to use in the kitchen

the 9 is not for you------

It would be good to know what you mean by "using around the house". I used to use my 15 and a 5 in the kitchen a lot, untill I got the ESEE Becker kitchen knives. I absolutely love the BK9. With a 9/15 combo, I'd be entirely comfortable at home and in the field.

Thanks for the replies and pictures guys. What I meant by "around the house" is outdoor yard work. I have no intention of using it in the kitchen or anything like that. Sorry for the confusion.

I personally would go for the Seven. Like stated before (by Wolf) it fills the same niche as the Ka-Bar 1217, with a much more rugged design. The blade is a miniscule amount thicker (just looking at them), wider, full tang, and with a shallower grind that's thinner than the 1217, and thus cuts better. It also has the Becker handles with the beatin' end and a pretty frickin' huge lanyard hole.
It's long enough to baton very well ( it's my go-to batonning knife and has the marks to prove it) and fight if you have to, as well as anything in between. It's not long enough to be unwieldy in shorter spaces or while cutting fine things. It balances very well, with a balance right around the front handle screw, which makes the blade lively and agile but still able to chop pretty well for a knife of its size.
IMHO a stripped BK7 with a long Spec- Ops basic sheath is the perfect woodsbumming knife.

Yup get the 9 it is the best. It will split wood, destroy saplings, trim trees, clean up fallen limbs you name it. Its the perfect yard knife.

The 9 is king and I would definitely recommend it for yard work. You might not think it would make much difference, but the weight and length of the 9 make it vastly superior to the 7 when it comes to limbing, chopping or splitting. The 4 might not be a bad option, either, if you want to add to the tough decision!

This isn't my bk9, but it did convince me to buy one after getting the privilege of using it for a week.
