BK9 vs BK5 vs BK7

Ok so now i think i decided i want to get my first 2 BK knives. Say if i went with the BK9 for strictly outdoor chores knife, what should i go with for more of a utility all around knife? BK 15? BK7? Or another smaller BK? Sorry for all the questions as I have never owned any fixed blades before. All i own right now is Spyderco folders. Just wanted to thank everyone for the help so far. I love this forum.

BK 11, 14, 15, 16 or 17 witch one is all preference. All of them do way more than you would think and can be with you most if not all of the time.

Since you are going BIG with the BK-9, IMO you should get a small one to compliment it: BK-11 or BK-14.

16 - hands down, the finest GP does it all heavy duty production blade under $75 I've used.

I just ordered a BK9 and a BK16. I think these knives are perfect for the tasks i have ahead. The only concern i have is with the handle of the BK9. I know people change the handles or mod it in some way. Any advice or suggestions? I will be researching until the knives come in and i just want to think ahead.

In my opinion, you just made a wise choice. Both knives can be used as-is out of the box and will be incredible. Handles are all personal preference, honestly. I don't mind the stock grivory at all, and if it's going to be really wet / nasty, I'll slap the grivory back on and maybe just stretch a piece of bike tubing over for extra grip. Congrats on the new steel! You'll be getting some great use out of them.

Nice work!! Great combo, and the 16 has micarta scales for it now too!

Just got the BK9 in and WOW! I am blown away. This thing looks awesome! I have no doubt it will do what i need it to do.

As for right now, like i suspected the handles are very slippery. What are some options that i have? I heard of people using racquetball tape? Changing the handles all together?

Also can someone point me in the right direction for lanyards/para cords? I know i need at least some type of lanyard but not even sure what my options are.

Cant wait till my BK16 gets here!!!

Wise choice on the 16. I've used mine for food prep, bushcraft, whittling, batoning, and chopping small limbs. I have fancier and more expensive knives to perform several of these tasks, but other than food prep, I'm not convinced that I have better.

I thought I wanted a 10, but it isn't much bigger than my RMD. So I was leaning toward a 7 as my "big" knife - for chopping and batoning anything where the 16 or RMD isn't quite enough knife.
After reading this thread, I think I've decided it's got to be the King - so thanks for posting!

I replaced my stock handles with kabar micarta from tomars. My brother took a different approach: he used a coarse sanding sponge to rough up the handle scales on his BK-7 so it had more texture.

You can also use a soldering iron to texture the grivory scales. You can do anything, your name, initials, favorite drink, picture of your wife if your that artistic, or just random lines.

My BK-9 has Camillus grivory (these scales are like the KA-BAR ones but slightly thicker), liners, and a chunk of innertube. I have big hands so I really like the bigger grip, and the inner tube is great to make it grippier. I experimented with stock KA-BAR grivory and micarta, but this is the rig that I'm keeping.

Once you settle on a handle setup, then you can start with the hobo duracoatin' :D

Hey Revival.....

Try the stock handles for a while......They are smooth for a reason.....You can use them bare handed a long time and not develop hot spots......Mind I always reccomend gloves.......Will Fennell and Anthony Lombardo dipped stock Becker handles in automatic transmission fluid and repeatedly stabbed a large tree bare handed......without slippage....You may still wish to mod or change the scales but, try ' em stock you may be pleasantly surprised.....Glad you like your Nine and I hope your new Sixteen meets expectations......The Sweet Sixteen is a great pairing ywith the Nine......

Welcome.....
