Thinking of buying a mid-range chopper and wondering about which would be better.

The BK9 or the Kershaw Outcast?

You know the drill. Go.

played with both id go with the BK9

Same here. I've owned both and liked the BK9 better. Especially the handle, the Outcast handle profile is very thin and got uncomfortable pretty quick.

I've heard the same BF. I would opt for a BK 9, as I am getting one before I get the Outcast this summer. Although, depending on funds, why not get both :)

I've handled both, I like the BK-9 better. It just looks like a classic bowie - and I like that :D

Convexed, the Outcast is an amazing chopper...much better than the Becker (or large Rangers as well)...if you get one, send it to richardJ for his convex job. I did it the old fashioned way and it took ages. Done properly, you need power tools...D2 is serious stuff.

I've handled the two mentioned knives, they are both wuality, solid knives that will fit the needs you may have. As for me, i chose the Outcast because of the low weight, solid kydex sheath, and the fact that its not as bulky and blocky.

I'm not knocking the Becker, just like a different style and fit. ----- Eric

PS, also forgot, i really dont like thick, rough epoxy coating on the Becker

the outcast will make an amazing chopper like jcurd said once its reground to a convex edge. i reground one for macgregor22 and its wicked.

I would go with the BK9. The outcast is a wicked knife but for me the handle is not comfortable.

I don't have any experience with the BK9 but I do own an Outcast. The D2 steel and Kershaw's heat treat are amazing...talk about tough. The handle is very thin, but I was surprised by how comfortable and durable it is (although I haven't spent hours cutting with it). It's lightweight for the size of blade and it comes with a decent kydex sheath.

I had mine thinned and convexed by Siguy and the difference is like night and day. Before it was good for splitting wood, now it's good for everything (except as a draw knife, for which it sucks).

Or just get yourself a BRKT Golok, which is my next big knife when they're available again. It'll do anything you ask of it and come back for more (including being used as a draw knife, if that's your thing).

Have em' both. Going with the BK-9, the Outcast handle just does not fill my hand. Although I may change my mind after I send it in to Richard J;)

Josh111: Are you having a rehandle done? Tell me about what you are having put on it, shape, etc.

Thanks,

Kage

i emailed macgregor22 and asked if he can use his outcast as a drawknife. he said it makes a pretty good draw knife actually. he removed the rubber handle and wrapped it with paracord.

Hi Richard J,

In my limited experience with the Outcast it only makes a decent draw knife on smaller pieces of wood. If you're trying to do something larger such as flattening out a small log, it doesn't work as well. I tried flattening out a medium sized log to make a bowl in it to demo hot rock boiling and it turned into an exercise in frustration. A machete did much better for this. Macgreggo22 may actually know what he's doing though, and that can make all the difference in the world!

Anybody do G-10 or micarta handles for an Outcast?
