Agreed, I wouldn't baton mesquite. I batoned too close to a knot on a piece of live oak and broke a chunk out of my first 9, Tooj replaced it for me.
Ka Bar rocks, as long as you aren't being stupid (or in my case, even if you are being stupid :)) they will cover you, but like others have already said, just be smart about it, make sure what you are driving your blade through before you smack the crap out of it.

Best advice I have heard on batonning. Really true for most knife tasks.
