BKRT Fox River or RC-4

I couldn't choose between the two.

Thanks Tony - exactly what I was looking for. Looking at the picture the blade width of the RC-4 is a tad wider. We know from the specs that the handle is a bit longer on the RC-4, but part of that length is truncated as a practical advantage due to the integrated guard. I think the big issue with most people in their gut reaction to these knives is the coated blade vs polished blade. I, and a number of users, tend to find the choil helpful on this knife in extending the grip for detailed work.

My RC-4 is a hybrid :) After getting it in the mail I sent it right up to Bark River. The crew stripped the black coating off and convex ground it. It's a cutting machine! Not that the original RAT edge is any slouch... I left the original edge and coating on my RC-3 and it's razor sharp as well. I don't own a Fox River but I do own several other Barkies and I can say with certainty that you can't go wrong with either choice.

You have got to get some pics up of that, that thing would be a beast!

I have a Fox River, contemplated the same question as the OP. The FR is a fantastic slicer with that awesome convex edge. My vote is for the Fox.

Fox River for me. It is the WLC school knife and a constant companion. It is also the knife I judge all others by. Perfect belt knife for any task at hand.

It really comes down to which grind you like and which looks better to you. Both are excellent, and both companies have a terrific warranty.

Although, I must admit I like the <cough>Aurora<cough> better. :D

I say pick up both and you can flip the other on the exchange and keep the one that suits your needs , both are great USA products !

+1. You'll be able to get rid of whichever you dont like, without much difficulty. Hell, one of us will probably end up with it. :p

Now I need to see a Aurora compared with a Fox river !!!

I never had a Fox River, but I had its half brother, the Northstar. Need to get one again. Anyway, I also had the Ontario RAT3's, and a RC4. The Barkie and RATs are some great knives, and would both be great choices.

Or, the true Knife Knuts motto, get both! You can find them at great prices used in the Exchange.

Thanks for all the replies. You gave me a lot of really good ideas to find out what knife I want. What would you say is the toughest?

You would have to work really hard to destroy either of them.

Both have bulletproof warranties that you can bank on if you do.

I don't have a Fox River granted, but I have a Bravo-1, and between my RC-4 and that, I'd pick the Rat. Even though I like the A2 better than I like the 1095, and even though the Bravo is a sharper and prettier knife, the Rat has hands-down superior ergonomics IMHO. I like holding and cutting with my Bravo. I LOVE holding and cutting with the RAT.

I have seen and held an RC-3, but not the RC-4. I would choose the BRK&T F R just because of the convex grind or thicker grip or A2 steel. Combined together, it would definitely be my choice. Mine is an '07 F R - and I like it better than the new one, B.M.. Yeah, probably because I have it and I am accustomed to it. Prettier - and better for drilling/boring - is my '07 LE North Star - but I won't suggest it as it bit me the first time I used it... the blade's edge begins right where the handle ends. Safer, and tougher (.215" thick!), my fg-equipped, with choil, BRK&T Gameskeeper is nearly ideal - but it's cutting edge is shorter than the N S or F R. Nearly as 'safe' as what I once considered, pre 'enlightenment', as my favorite bushy knife - a Buck Vanguard. Now, 'post enlightenment', I simply couldn't be caught in the woods with such an economical knife! I think, given your choices, I would go for the F R.

Stainz

PS If Buck would just make the Vanguard without the hollow grind - and with a convex edge - that would be a winner. I have one in 154CM steel, made in September, so I know they have other steels, too...

Amen! I would be in line right behind you. I have one and I love it except the hollow grind!
