Black Blades?

Other than a few black-bladed Police models a while back, Spyderco has not jumped on the black blade bandwagon.

Now for me a black blade is something that

a) Some customers like,

b) Usually looks a heck of a lot better than bead blast, but not as good as satin IMHO, and

c) Makes me explain to the uninitiated that, no, it is not for sneaking around in the dark with naked steel, but to add an extra measure of corrosion resistance.

What are Spyderco's reasons for not offering a bunch of black-blade SKU's?

Hmmm . . . Maybe that's it right there!

James - Wen the perfect black coating comes along, we'll make black blades. One that;

1. Does not alter the heat treat or in any way affect the steel.

2. Does not come off and cause our customer service to deal with a time consuming explanation that the coating is a coating, etc.,etc.,

3. Does in fact offer corrosion resistance and doesn't find the developed rust, under the coating, erupt through the coating like the "alien" to reveal a rusted pitted blade.

We have not had the great results with the coatings that the coating manufactures claim. We're not closed minded about the subject, just being careful.

I have to agree with what Sal says, as the black TiN coated Enduras rusted easier than the satin finish models, or at least that was my experience.

Something thought I have wondered a long time though, was why nobody, as far as I know, has duplicated the TiN coatings that Paragon applied to some of their early knives. I have a few of their autos that have an almost mirror black finish on them that does not rust, at all. Was told that it was a some sort of TiN finish. Not to mention a few White Wolf knives that have a wonderful black TiN finish that hasn't rusted either.
