I recently came across several files of the make Black Diamond. Does anyone here know what kind of steel they are made from and if they're any good for knife making?

Some people would tell you that files are made from 1095, but those are just guesses.
I'd say give them a shot. I edge quench file knives at non-magnetic in heated corn oil, and the hardened area comes out a nice gray that skates a file. I've tried a few brands and they all seem to work the same so far. I'm no expert of course, that's just my experience.

Black Diamond is Nicholson's 'better' grade of file. I've never used one to make a blade from, but Wayne Goddard has written that they were analyzed at 1.25 carbon and that they make great knives.

I have used Black Diamond tools for forged knives before. They worked like W2 on steroids. The edge was unbelievable. Not the best for choppers, but for slicers it was wonderful.

Stacy, do you remember if you just used a W2 heat treat, or did you have to do some experimenting?
