Black finish on blade

So I'm wondering how sturdy the black coating is on the blade on the all black PM2? I'm curious because I had ordered a PM2 with the satin finish sometime back and the all black is what the guy told me that came in.
Do I keep it or have him try to get me the silver?

It is fairly tough as it is DLC. It will scuff eventually with use though. I prefer Satin with the PM2.

I prefer satin on all my knives. I've just waited since sept for this one. Then the wrong one comes in.

I go for the satin. I like the less tactical look. I also wondered about cutting food with a coated blade.

Then don't compromise. Be patient. Check around. Watch the exchange. That is where I got mine several years ago when they were even more hard to find.

I like the DLC coated knives. They are great for use outdoors. Gives that extra level of corrosion protection that I like. I also have the ss liners taken out and cerakoted as well. Had some rust form one time on one of my Para 2's when I took apart to clean. Ever since then, I usually buy the DLC blades and have the liners cerakoted. I'm OCD like though :D

i had a all black PM2,then sold it shortly after, also owned the black manix 2 and let it go last week!the DLC is vary hard and probably should last a lifetime with proper use,i have only kept the satin PM2 only because its scary as it is! let alone with a black coated blade! ever see the look on peoples faces!!

The black ones have an interest all their own. I only have a couple that I carry. Mine haven't gotten much wear but I understand that the Spyderco coating is more durable than most other black coatings.

DLC adds cost to the blade, and as Spyderco really knows how to put a gorgeous satin finish on a knife (I maintain that the most beautiful folder I'll ever own is the Calypso sprint run for reasons you can't see in photos), I see no reason to add it to my knives for my usage, and as a result all my Spydies are satin finished. It's certainly a practical coating, however! If you like it, get it!

In my experience spydercos dlc holds up very well. I have found though that the dlc coated blade aren't as smooth and seem to affect the centering on the ones I have used and handled, although it could be just a coincidence...

DLC is tough as nails in my experience, I have carried and used this for the last three years non stop, still going strong; that said I should have kept this in the safe and used the satin finish instead, I love the look of the black when it's new:

What looks shiny is just the DLC becoming kind of polished, the only scratch is over by the tip.

I have a Lum CF with a black blade which I modified with sandpaper. It's basically still black but now it is also silky smooth all over (especially the pivot was too stiff). It might have been a mistake to do this to the sprint Lum, but it was an experiment. I like the idea of a black blade not because they're scary to NKP but because I reckon the chances of being able to whip it out, use it, and put it back without anyone being the wiser are higher :D It's not tacti-cool, it's using discretion ;)

You're talking about the Lum Chinese? That's a wicked blade, I regret not getting one!

The DLC holds up really well. I prefer the black because I like the way it slowly changes with use. But I have more non coated knives that coated.

Well thanks to everyone on here, I went with the all black pm2. It is a good looking blade.

personally I like the black because it does show some wear ... doesn't seem fitting for a knife named the Paramilitary to stay all squeaky clean. that being said, a lot of times you'll think the DLC coating is really beat up, but then you put it under some soap and hot water and give it a scrub, it cleans up real nice. people are always thinking that the DLC coating is wearing off, when instead it's that the DLC coating is grinding off material from whatever you're cutting and that material is then sticking to the DLC.

the only knock I have against the DLC coating in usage is that you can feel the additional drag from the extra friction that DLC has over a satin or polished blade. but that's a very, very minor knock ... maybe just more of an observation, really. it will slow you down by a millisecond or two when cutting.
