Black finish on blade

I really like the looks of a worn black coated blade. To me, it adds character to a knife when it accumulates honorable scars from honest work. Oddly enough, I own few knives with black blades and exactly zero Spydercos with coated blades.

I like the DLC coated knives. They are great for use outdoors. Gives that extra level of corrosion protection that I like. I also have the ss liners taken out and cerakoted as well. Had some rust form one time on one of my Para 2's when I took apart to clean. Ever since then, I usually buy the DLC blades and have the liners cerakoted. I'm OCD like though :D

I thought the same thing too, but DLC (the last time I read the datasheets) is not a corrosion barrier. There are apparently some DLC that the suppliers label as increasing corrosion protection (not corrosion proof), but those types were less tough/hard & less wear resistant, so it is usually not the type that is put on knives. DLC does decrease friction though, along with (somes DLC) reducing glare and increasing my backwoods ninja cred.

None of my S30V blades have had rust problems except my DLC-coated one, which surprised me, since I initially assumed it was a water-proof barrier. DLC might even be worse, since it is obviously porous, and drying those pores is harder than just wiping raw stainless, but I am just assuming that.

I just like DLC because it is black. The fact that it actually protects (from scratches) & decreases friction is just icing on the cake. :D
I remember getting some scratches on some DLC, back in the day, and then I stumbled across a post saying that DLC is harder than most blade steels (it is). I was exstatic when I saw that I could just clean off most scratches with a wire brush or brillo pad. DLC rocks!

Nullity, are you sure it decreases friction? I have no way of empirically testing it, but to me it's always felt like my DLC coated spydercos have more friction than the ones without it. even just running a finger over the blade surface, the DLC seems more grabby than a satin or stonewashed blade

Yes. That is actually one of the primary functions of DLC.

Well, you do have a point, but surface finish and the slickness of DLC are two different things, but kinda related.

Here is a Wikipedia quote:

The primary desirable qualities are hardness, wear resistance, and slickness (DLC film friction coefficient against polished steel ranges from 0.05 to 0.20).

So... if you are cutting through steel, a DLC coating helps... lol.
DLC should be smoother to open/close, in theory.

I have the dlc on my Southard. I wanted it on my pm2 but I'm glad I didn't. It is really tough and doesn't show scratches like you would think. But I much prefer the satin.

Words of wisdom; I washed my blade with dawn soap and it gave it a dull look. I tried windex as well and the hazy dull look remained. I had to wipe some oil on the blade to bring it back to its normal dark black. For that reason I won't be getting it again.

Ninjas prefer matte black.

Seriously though, soap is probably a sub-optimal choice of cleaner because steel prefers oil. Something like WD40, which serves as both a cleaner and a lubricant, is a better choice.
