So... I'm not normally one for shopping at all after thanksgiving if i can avoid it... but I found myself frustrated and struggling with making my first sheath these last few weeks (for my xmas exchange knife) when I stumbled across a card in my mail from Tandy Leather. 7am to 8am Friday 40% off my whole purchase. Well, I figured, maybe having the right tools will make a difference...

I set my alarm Thursday night for 5am (did I mention that i'm more than an hour and a half from the closest tandy store?) and drove up in the dark to sit outside the store... Well... it was worth it (at least IMO) I spent about 2x what I was planning on spending, but I also got a heck of a lot more than I was ever expecting to get.

Here's my haul, all the tools I need for hand stitching (unfortunately they didn't have any copies of that book on hand stitching leather that everyone recommends) all sorts of leather, both tooling and non tooling, etc for every project I can think of.

That's a double shoulder thingy of real good quality 6/7 oz tooling leather, a whole saddle side of 10/12 oz tooling leather, a whole cow of an odd grey garmet/upholstry leather (going to fix up some bellows with this) and two umm, somethings in the clearance bin. It's some split that's just beneath the top-grain, kinda stiff, but soft, i'm sure i'll figure out something for it, even though i dont even know what animal it came from.

Here's a closeup of the tools, A set of 6 basic tooling tools, a stitching palm, sewing awl, swivel knife, adjustable groover, horn creaser, edge beveler, a stitch spacer set, waxed linen in two colors, waxed artificial sinew, some harness stitching needles, free hand groover, and a big bottle of dye... Oh yeah and i forgot to mention the three nice stingray skins I picked up as well.

Total cost... 300 bucks before tax. Retail would have been ~1000$ Sure, it's no large screen TV... but I think I'll have a lot better luck with my next sheath. Oh I also signed up for the wholesale club while i was there, and the guy who runs the store said I can go to any/all of the classes he's teaching in the next year on tooling / carving / etc for leatherworking for free now.

I guess black Friday sometimes DOES have a sale worth getting up early for =)

I also visited my local Tandy for the deals:) What is nice is that their specials always run on Friday and Saturday. Looks like you got a bunch of goodies. Have fun.

I almost went and decided that they probably wouldn't be participating in black friday... Dangit! Nice haul!

Every time I go to Tandy for 'a couple of things', I always end up spending over $100 (and/or they are out of half the things I need), so I've been avoiding going there for a few months. I am running low on some supplies that I really need to replenish, so I really should have taken advantage of that sale too.

Yeah, there are no Tandy stores in rhode island either, which is why i had to get up so early and drive so far =)

Sign up for their wholeseller discounts, its like black friday everyday. I did buy some hides during the sale as well, could not believe the price.

Justin excellent buys ,what color dye did you get. I like the light brown and the dark brown feibings , very good dye by the way . I like it the best of all the types ive used so far. The stamps you got are ones ive bought and use them all the time. I have spent several weeks making knothing but sheaths and make a pattern on hard plastic . I then write on it what type of knife works good on lenght / size and then saves me a ton of time on the next one . I now have 15 patterns to pick from, but really like only a few.
