The black-handled Matriarchs have FINALLY arrived in South Africa! Those of you who have "ordered" some of these, please check your EMAIL for arrangements where applicable. SORRY if I've skipped anyone, the list was quite long! Just contact me again, please...

OK, on to the pics:

THIS IS WHERE WE'VE STARTED:

Congratulations on a VERY well-executed model, Spyderco! You REALLY did not give too much away with the prototype!

Just a few observations on the Matriarch's defensive capabilities:

AS A DEFENSIVE KNIFE, THE MATRIARCH IS AWESOME!! IMHO, it is BETTER than the Civilian, for various reasons (which we will not cover here)...

On a lighter note:
the Matriarch has already "defended" itself against myself, as well as against one of the local Spyderco agency's Sales Reps!

The Sales Rep closed the Matriarch, without LOOKING what she's doing (being more used to linerlocks), and got the Matriarch's blade embedded in her finger. They (the doctors) are still unsure whether all (or just some) of the tendons were severed...

AND THEN, I've just managed to put the Matriarch into my hand!

(HOW DUMB CAN YOU BE!?!?!?) I've practised an opening method, ONCE AGAIN without proper attention, and the Matriarch spun out of my hand. So much for ALWAYS being in control!! In the tumbling process it sliced through the thicker meat at the bottom of my hand. AND TAKE NOTE: nothing will stop this beauty once it has started cutting! It went STRAIGHT through while tumbling in the air.

BUT DON'T WORRY, the Matriarch has not been damaged in any way! It just fell on a carpet, the tip is still intact, and ready to cut something else...

So, if you want to learn something today (or just refresh your memory): PAY ATTENTION WHEN WORKING WITH MATTER SEPARATORS!! One forget this all too often...

Looks to me like Spyderco has done a bang up job of making a matter separator with the Matriarch. Unfortunately, matter separation takes place sometimes when we don't want it to. This is a tough lesson to learn and remember. We all probably get a little reminder now and then. My Civilian has reminded me a couple of times. I'll bet the Matriarch is even better at reminding. Maybe because it's name comes from the female side of things.
