The chamfered holes do three things

1 Allow for some lightening as the midsection on these's knives is robust

2 If you have ever pinched a blade to do presise work such as skinning, working a splinter out etc ( sorry lack of better examples. Well they allow the user some secure purchase of the knife allowing one to manipulate the blade with confidence.
