• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

Black oxide is achieved using special salts that create a tightly adherent magnetite (Fe3O4?) on the part. It is a good protective surface.

I read this on another forum. Could anybody give a more complete explanation?

Could this be done to an existing blade without rehardening?

That black oxide is the same patina that develops on carbon steel blades. It is a form of rust. I've heard letting rust form then boiling will produce it and exposure to mild acid (vinegar, lemon juice etc) will do it.

It protects against further rusting but will wear off.
