Black Palm Wood or Giraffe?

I'm getting ready to order my next Buck Custom and am torn between Black Palm Wood and the recently reintroduced Giraffe scales. The first issue is that I'm unsure about the true appearance of their Black Palm as I can't seem to find any realistic pictures of Buck's Black Palm scales. Also; I'm weighing my decision of which scale type to get, against the fact that Buck already removed availability of Giraffe once. I'm wondering if I should snag it while it's currently available. Can someone post pictures or comment on the Black Palm? Should I jump on the Giraffe scales first? Thanks.

Hello Mort,
That was a stone handled knife one of a kind. I went to look at buck 's offering and the Giraffe scales are $55 more than the black palm. They both look not natural in Buck's depiction. The Giraffe are dyed. I wonder what the real color is ?

I would say giraffe. I like how mine came out. Dye job wasn't bad. I would post a picture but I had to get help to do it. If interested it should still be in the thread tilted new scale options from October. I'm thinking of getting a second giraffe scaled knife. The price is making me hesitant a bit

Here are pics of a Buildout 110 from some years back that has pal wood scales. Least I think they're Palmwood. Will try and confirm that.

Thank you everyone for your responses, and an additional thanks to those who were able to post a photo. While I still like both scales, I'm now leaning heavily toward getting the Giraffe first. I'd hate to miss-out if they discontinue it again. RedGoatee: If my custom arrives looking anything like yours, I will be very pleased indeed.

Glad I could help you choose. Thanks for saying that about the knife. When you get you're knife. Please post a picture if you can. Would love to see what you get. Especially if you go with the giraffe scales. I would love another giraffe scale knife. I've only seen mine

What is the appeal of giraffe bone?

I'm curious. It looks pretty much like any bone slab, so the appeal can't be looks.

Is it the perception that it might become unavailable at some point? Because I don't see any possibility that it could be the next ivory. It just doesn't have the attractiveness of ivory.

You could substitute any bone and not know the difference, it seems.

I'm sure it's one of those materials that will come and go. Man-made items have a better chance of being a constant option.

The appeal for me was I once saw giraffe bone scales on a fixed blade once years ago. I liked them a lot when I saw it. I was hoping ever since for giraffe scales to be offered on a 110. I personally like how the giraffe bone looks

Giraffe can be shaded (or dyed as the case may be) to a more orange color. Giraffe leg bone is very dense, more dense than any other available bone. A lot of the attractiveness of GB would be in the telling "this is Giraffe bone on the scale". "This is heart of palm scaled." doesn't quite carry the same symbolism.
That said Giraffe's have started to become a species of concern in many places of Africa. As human populations continue to increase pressure on all large animals rises also. It's difficult to hide a Giraffe in a wild spot. At some point GB might become involved in the ban's on international animal trade if the value goes up enough to start commercial poaching. As a concerned hunter I would not want for a problem to develop and if I found a nice GB knife I would currently feel Ok to purchase it. In the future I might not. Palm wood is attractive also. 300

I see your point. Maybe Buck has just done a poor job with dying the bone.

I haven't seen any giraffe on Buck knives that looked good. I Googled it and found some that looks really good. Much better than the sort of pinkish 110 shown earlier in this thread. Like this:

Notice how the stark white has turned to a nice off white or tan and much of it is an attractive dark red hue.

I must admit that this (as well as some others that show up) are very appealing.

I would probably go giraffe between the two. I've been thinking about picking one up myself. Loving the photos coming through.
