Up to this point, I have only used a little bit of canvas Micarta. I was wondering how black paper Micarta holds up? it is tough enough for kitchen knives? How does it grind? Are their any special considerations in using it and working with it that differs from canvas and linen?

Works great for kitchen knives

I agree. Used it on several kitchen knives and it holds up just fine. As with any micarta, just watch for tear out while drilling.

It holds up well and I think it's way easier to use than canvas. As Don said it will burn easy. Seems like it turns kind of chalky when it burns.

I love the stuff. Burns easily and it will show you where you missed a grit when you go to the buffer:)

Doesn't add a bunch of weight like metal bolsters. Use metal pins for contrast or black phenolic to try to blend and stay the same color. You will see where the pins are though.

Hidden pins are an easy fix for that.

It's good. Tough to grind though, and burns quickly.

Paper micarta doesn't forgive wornt belts and it will get brown in no time if the belt just rubs it, specially with the finer grits. If properly sanded and buffed the shine is beautiful.

Black paper micarta is a fantastic material for kitchen knives. I've made several with it and they have all held up very well. I do agree with everything said above about it. It shines very nicely when finished well, almost like a synthetic and more stable buffalo horn. It is also very susceptible to burning especially when using worn belts. Overall, it is well worth the effort.

It is one of my preferred material for bolsters, on hidden tang kitchen knives. I have observed some white paper micarta I had once split along some paper seams- was not good quality. I've not seen any black like that yet, though.
