The Black/Wild Raspberries are ready for pickin' here in Southeast Michigan. I went out on my lunch hour today. Unfortunately, I only took one cup with me.

I might head back out after work if the rain holds off. If not, I'll be out every day this week.;)

Anyone else pick 'em? I'll be trying my hand at preserves this season. Anyone got a good recipe or tips?

Man those look tasty! Im gonna be lookin for wild Huckleberries on my property in Idaho later this week..;)

yum... we have blackberries all over the place here.... they should all be ready for picking, in the next few weeks....:) we usually cruise the neighborhood and forage as much as we can....:D

We never can them, they usually dont even make it as far as the house!

The window around here is small if you don't get them right away, the birds do.

You should pick only those that are fully ripe, black not red. They are full of flavor and lots of anti-oxidents.
Does anyone remeber Howard Johnson's 28 flavors of ice cream ? My favorite was always black raspberry !!

Those look fantastic! I planted a raspberry bush a few years ago at my parents place (since they don't grow locally) and enjoy the hell out of it every summer! They have just started to ripen.

Yeah, there are a couple that aren't fully ripe. Those were unlucky enough to be next to those that were and just barely within reach.

Sorry, I don't remember that Ho-Jo flavor but now that you mention it, some of these might be destined to end up in the blender with some ice cream.
:p

That brings back memories! Used to pick them as a kid, they grew all over the place at my Grandmother's. Funny story: we picked for a little while and had a few buckets of Blackberry goodness each. Dog sniffed up a bee's nest, and they attacked. We ran for over half a mile, screaming like kids - heck, we were kids - and never dropped a berry. Good times.

Enjoy.

Man, I sure miss those! When I was growing up in upstate NY, I used to just wander around the woods when they were ripe, eating my fill of those black raspberries.

We used to plan camping trips around blackberry season when I was a kid. Ate most of them right out of the pail. :) Really good memories, and still one of my favorite fruits... tied with strawberries for number one, actually. Mom had a really easy recipe for "refrigerator jam" using blackberries, but I don't know it. Google!

If you have enough of either, make you some homemade wine. For goodness sake, don't add too much sugar or try to drink it too soon. Either will ruin the flavor. Wine made with either "bear-berries" or strawberries and some apple-juice or white-grape-juice concentrate to boost the sugar content (NOT white sugar) will be a real treat come Christmas or next spring... if you can wait that long.

You should see how many we have in these parts...I picked some today while I was at my Grandma's waiting for the guy to replace my windshield. I'll see if I can upload the awful pic I took from my cell phone.

Also, I made a pie out of mine :) Preserve isn't too bad though. Let me know if no one else has a recipe or searching online doesnt yield anything and I will ask my mom.

ETA: Here is the pic...sorry about the quality. I will see if I can get some better ones tomorrow

Blackberry cobbler...mmmmm.

When I was growing up there was a big powerline about 1/4 mile behind the house in our woods. They had cut the trees down for the line and what grew up in their place was almost totally blackberry bushes. This 'patch' was about 150 ft wide and maybe 1/2 mile long.....needless to say we had more blackberries than we could ever eat.

I have several bushes growing in my yard here in upstate NY. There is a lot of logging in my area and wild berries are one of the first plants that seem to pop up afterwards... lots of berries around.

My sisters and I used to go on a berry-picking expedition early each summer so my mom could make a blackberry pie or two. She'd give us an old pot or collander to put them in. My older sisters were good berry pickers/gatherers. All the berries I picked went straight into my stomach. :)

Stay sharp,

Make blackberry jam? I'm lucky if enough make it home to go into a pie!

Me too...and blackberry cobbler is my favorite.

We don't have black raspberries down here but I took several pictures of them while I was in western Illinois...I wish I had brought some back to see if I could get them started here. There were lots of Mullberries too, man those sure were good!

Good to see I'm not the only one that enjoys them.

I went back out today for another quart and a half. I'd have stayed longer but the mosquitos are thick today. Rain last night and zero wind.

No camera today but I'll get a pic when I get home and add them to yesterdays haul. That is, if the kids didn't finish them off already.

I'll be wearing the mosquito net tomorrow if I go out for more.

interesting topic shoudl come up... i aws out trimming our hedges along the back of the garage the other day and noticed for the first time in the 8 years ive lived there, that the bush has berries on it!

they look like black raspberries / blackberries but i think they may be blackberries because they dont have that little hollowed out "cone" core in the middle when you pick them. the bush doesnt have thorns either....

does anyone know the actual difference between the two? I will try to get smoe pictures up very soon here. I would really like to know what they actually are!
