A friend of mine asked me if I could make him a tanto but he wants it to be all black. How can I achieve this. Is it a powder coat or something entirely different. I'm still new so this is gonna be challenging to say the least but I'll never turn down a challenge. Thanks for any help!

You will have to paint it or coat it with something to get a black finish. It will eventually rub off or chip. I would make the tsuka and saya black and leave the blade metal alone.

There are ways to blacken a blade chemically that aren't too bad, and several moderately durable surface coatings that are baked on. All of these are best professionally applied. However, all treatments will be removed or damaged in normal use or maintenance. Cerakote would be one of the tougher coatings.

You could send it off to get it anodized, or coated with cerracote, or some other sort of visiting with high wear resistance... or you could blue it, or just paint it.

Show your friend a acid etched, stone washed blade. Maybe he likes that as much or more than black?
