And now for something completely different !
I thought that I would go to the greatest knowledge base around,so try this one for size:--

There are all sorts of sites selling the black titanium as rings , watchbands, etc. but after hours of online searching I have not been able to find out how it is produced. does anyone out there have this info.,or where to find it ?
Thanks, Don

Don what they are calling "Black Titanium" is in fact not titanium at all. It is zirconium which forms a very hard oxide layer when heat treated. Now with that said it is possible to custom make a metal combining zirconium and titanium using powdered materials. But to do this you would have to commit to a very expensive (think 200K or so) run of materials.
Check out the Timascus rings which are a true damascus of titanium and zirconium materials at www.titaniumera.com

i think i have seen some place on here a thread about making Ti black or at least dark grey using oxyclean and doing like an etch in it

They could be referring to a PVD coating (like TiNi). TiNi is usually gold/straw colored, but there are PVD coatings that are black being marketed as "Black PVD Titanium."

Here it is used in 'jewelry':

And a description of what they're calling "Black PVD Titanium" here:

I have seen it used on watchbands--it's a good, hard finish for titanium which, as you know, is otherwise soft and prone to scuff and gall.

Titanium Carbo Nitride coatings are black and very hard, about Rc89. Not that the hardness means anything more than it imparts wear resistance to the part.

It is done in a vacuum metalizing setup usually used for TiN coating.
