Here is the second knife that I have made from start to finish. It was made for my massage therapist at his request, as a knife for fleshing raw hides to prep them for leatherwork. He wanted a no frills knife, drew me out a quick idea for what he wanted and it was an Ulu! Must be a useful design or something. I did a number of different variations in cardboard to see what he wanted. He stressed that the most important thing was that it needed to be able to take and hold a good edge. He did not want anything fancy as this is a user first and foremost (hence the 120 grit finish-easy to redo, and the non polished edge as it came from the very fine DMT sharpening jig). I couldn't do that to him though- so I had to fancy it up for him some. He still does not know about the stand, hope he likes it.

Stats:
3/32" CPM154, 4 3/4" blade, scandi grind. Blackwood handle with mosaic pins- man does the blackwood shine up and show hidden figure. Heat treated to RC61 by Rob! of Ranger Original (thanks Rob). Stand is an ulu made of Lacewood and whitetail antler. Runes say "Shane"- for my therapist.

Let me know what you think- good and bad (especially the bad so I can learn guys- don't be mean but let me have it).

Very nice for a 2nd knife. Radiused transition between the blade and tang makes for a strong design. Looks like its exactly as the customer wanted, a good user.

One thing I would do differently is to round the corners on the handle a bit more, squarish edges on a handle are quite uncomfortable, especially if using it for an extended period of time.

I would also just knock the corners off at the ends of the cutting edge just a hair. I think in the position they are in, the are most likely to bite the hand thats using the blade.

Lastly, I would round the top edge of the blade nearest the handle slightly just to take the sharp edge off and prevent knuckles from getting scuffed.

Keep 'em coming, you are doing fine.

Very Nice Kris!

How do you get the handle tight enough to avoid swiveling with just the single pin?

The stand is a really nice touch too.

I am really looking forward to seeing the others.

Thanks guys! Rob!- I just drilled it out with a 3/32" bit (3 holes), then used a homemade 3/32" scraper (can't remember the real name right now) to clean it out, testing as I went. Drilled a 1/8" hole for the pin (fit beautifully), mixed some gorilla glue with some blackwood dust (still foamed white though- was worth a try), and fit it all together. Maybe it was just dumb beginners luck but it fit together very well and glued up rock solid.

Tek- I did radius the top so the knuckles are not skinned, just not enough to change the look. I hear what you mean about rounding the handle more- I did do some but my therapist choose the squared off design and I let him hold it put together without glue or pins before heart treat and he said that it was just as he wanted it so I left it.

Thanks for everything so far guys, I really learned on this one- simple design with a lot to consider.

Rob, I hope to get more of the knives done in the next week as I found out today that I need another surgery on my left leg as the plate in it broke and refractured my fibula, so after that I will be down for a while again and the wedding is in a month and 8 days- Gulp!!!
