Hi Folks,

I'm offering Premium American Black Walnut from Missouri. Made in the USA :)

Blocks are; 2" wide, 5" long and 1" thick, + or - but most are a bit over.
(I find it difficult to make a large bowie/fighter with a 1.5" block)

Price is $15 each, minimum of 4 blocks, $60 shipped.ALL SOLD

This is all premium burl, NO plain, straight grain stuff......

I have around 80 to 100 blocks available at this time and they are dry.

First photo are blocks I sanded to 220 grit and wiped oil on.
The second photo is what they will look like when you get them. (Rough Sawn)
I'm not sanding every block...LOL :D

My Paypal is; info@sunfishforge.com

Or check/money order to;
Don Hanson
PO Box 13
Success, Mo 65570

Thanks,

I ordered mine!!:D Now when are you going to post some walrus?;)

Ive used walnut from many sources, its one of my favorite woods to use. This stuff that Don has works as good as or better then any walnut ive ever worked with. Its harder/denser than most walnut, works about like good hard curly maple. Looks good & way tougher than average walnut too....

That said, Don put me some of the nicer pieces up;)

Thanks Guys!
I'll be sending it out Priority mail tomorrow, or Monday at the latest.

Like Matt said, I've also found this Missouri walnut burl to be a good bit harder than other walnut.

Matt, I'll fix ya up :)

Joe, Chuck, I wish I had a source for fossil ivory, like I do for black walnut :o

But you DO have a source........it's called your shop, your garage, your bedroom closet, your basement, your laundry room, your wife's china cabinet, the medicine cabinet in the bathroom, etc, etc:D

But I have plans for all that ivory :D

The above premium blocks are exceptional. But I will also have a few Extra Premo blocks for $20 each, if anyone is interested.
Only 8 blocks at this time (2 orders).
4 for $80 shipped. These are sold, thanks!

Thanks Folks!

Also wanted to let y'all know, that a small few of these blocks have small checks (surface cracks) in them. They are usually very shallow and grind out, but occasionally I have to zap one with super glue when shaping a handle, it disappears when finished. This is rare though. If anyone receives a bad block, I will replace it.

This walnut also stabilizes very good, if one wants to have it done. WSSI has done some for me in the past, with very good results.

I got my 4 super premium blocks today and all I can say is WOW!!!:D

Thanks, Joe! Good to hear.

I have shipped about half of what I started with last week.
It will be a good while before I have anymore to offer.

Regards,

I got my set of hunter sized blocks today and they are just as nice. I showed the biggers ones to the furniture restoration guy who has the shop next door to mine and he asked if Don might have any bigger boards. That's a solid recommendation in my book.:D

Oh, and I'll be the know it all wet blanket here. This wood is not actually "burl" IMO. It is "crotchwood" with lots of curl and "feathering" which is the kind of wood that high end gunmakers charge stupid amounts of money for and also the wood that Bentley uses for th trim in their cars. (I was surprised to find out that they use high grade American black walnut these days instead of English) Stronger than true burlwood and, IMHO, better looking than the claro walnut burl that I have used in the past. Also better looking that the nice English walnut I have in my cabinet. It doesn't have the yellow colors that "marblecake" English walnut can have, whihc I don't necessarily like.

I have a question. A fine gentleman named Bob Pickle is doing some work on slip joints for me. He refuses payment besides chocolate and knives for parts. I would like give him some new material (wood etc.) to replace what he used for my knives. Would these blocks be suitable for smaller folder handle scales?

Joe, you're right, it is "crotchwood" but a lot of folks may not know what that is, so i just call it burl. It is the premo stuff :D A lot of gun stock wood comes out of Missouri.

morrowj_98, This walnut will work fine as folder scales but typically, walnut isn't seen on many folders. I have used a lot of walnut on hard working knives in the past and my brouther still does, it holds up very well.

Thanks All,
