hello, i have heard some mention before about cutting black walnut root. This black walnut is approx 45ft tall. It started leaning about 2-3 years ago and each year more of the roots show. what is the best way to ( if thee is) cut into theses roots??I figure at the rate this tree is leaning its only a matter of time before its done for. i figure 3-5 years. The roots that are showing- are they gonna be of any figure or value just sitting there exposed to the elements do i need to go ahead and start cutting them?? The tree overall has one nice crotch are and about 15-20ft of really straight rise which maybe i could get a portable mill out here. dont know if its worth it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated--thank you-mark/marekz

marek - I believe it is the central tap root of the Walnut that you're seeking. Those other roots will check, warp, split and be unusable. Not all Walnut trees have a tap root, but if its there, cut it off, coat the cut surface with latex paint and wait about two years.
Good luck, its gorgeous wood if you can find it.

A tap root will be usually going straight down from around the center-if im not mistaken. It seems like a quit hard laboring job. i think you would need some kind of equipment- that sucker should go deep. i guess ill just leave it be. thank marekz

I've always been told theres just as much tree under ground as there is above it.
