Blackberries and the middle of nowhere

Verizon usually ranks as having the best network, but their plans are restrictive and pricey. Go with Sprint. Sprint plans are considerably cheaper, and any of the decent plans will let you roam (on Verizon) for free. Sprint has the best data network in most places as well.

I keep my phone on Sprint only for data and best available for voice. I never have dropped calls, spotty quality, or any other issues, and I travel up and down the east coast and into the midwest on a regular basis. I use my phone as a modem when I do gun shows, and the speed on EVDO is almost like a high speed connection even in the most podunk places.

I've had a crappy PDA phone for a while now, and was thinking about getting the Touch Pro 2, which looks awesome. I am thinking about getting the Hero instead, since it runs Android (Google's open source phone operating system), the only thing that could give any competition to the iPhone. Android has something like 5K programs available compared to iPhones 70K or whatever, but I'm betting that the Android count will rapidly increase as more phones start using it.

The carrier is the key. I don't use them but many friends here do. If you don't have them on alltel here your out of luck. Many visiting sales people complain that their AT & T BB'S don't work here.

This story has been repeated many places with differing carriers.

As mentioned elsewhere, a lot depends on where you travel. Tri-Mode phones MAY be useful if you travel in remote areas. If you go to Europe, you need a different phone and plan normally but, not always.

If you don't travel much or travel within a certain area mainly, ask co-workers and people you run into while standing in line at the Quickie-Mart. Coverage where you live, play and work is what really counts. If you travel a lot, coverage is generally good but varies with each city.

I have an 8330 Curve w/ Verizon. This was the phone that I used to call 911 and listen to Werewolves of London via Pandora a few weeks ago from the middle of the forest.

My brother works for verizon, and just because of the constant e-mailing and txting, he needs a smartphone, and he chooses blackberry. He used the 8830(bullet proof, very tough for a phone) for like 2 years before switching to the tour which he has no problems with. My sister used the 8830 for a year before switching to a HTC witch she's in love with. Though the only experiance I've had with blackberries are playing with my brother's and sisters, they've said they are great quality. I'd go with verizon wireless for superior service and more coverage around the world.
