BlackBerry Curve vs. Iphone vs. Droid

That is not going to happen, my friend. It was supposed to. But now, it's not since AT&T renewed their contract with Apple until 2012. They wanted the 4G iPhone before Verizon got it. Once again Verizon customers get screwed by the greedy Steve Jobs.

Glad I'm on AT&T. If Verizon wanted the iPhone they could get it, all it takes is money and Verizon won't pony up what it takes to get the iPhone. Plus Verizon is a different network so the iPhone would need a full overhaul to convert from GSM to whatever Verizon runs on.

Good thread. I've been on the fence ready to go to a 'smart phone' for the past month. When I slipped off the dock and fell into brackish water and lost my LG-enV yesterday, that sealed it....

Off to Verizon. I looked at the offerings: The Droid Incredible was out of the question: Backordered for a month at this store.

After takinng the considerations, I took Ken's advice and got a Blackberry Storm2. For me, the REALLY CLEAR screen was a BIG selling point. (It only has 2000 apps, compared to the Droid's 5000. Yikes, I've have never used ONE app, so 2000 sounds OK to me. :))

Thanks, Ken and others. I had to go to sleep last night after reading the manual. My head hurt.... ;)

I just got a Crackberry Bold 9000 the other day, I am trying to figure out how I managed for so long . It could just be the crack that they pump into you every time you use it, but it is a far superior phone to all the others I have used to date. I could have gotten an iPhone for the same price, but everyone I know that has had one had to get it replaced multiple time due to screen failures

Old thread but....

I just got a droid x. I love this phone with all my heart. I used it last night to tethered to my laptop for 3 hours in a meeting. Perfect. Felt like a DSL connection and best of all when it was over my phone was fully charged.

The free Google Navigation is BEYOUND cool. I was walking around in SF the other day. I got hungry and wanted chinese food. I activated navigation with a voice command from my Bluetooth head set and searched for food joints near by, got directions to a close by place. Never broke my stride.

Great multi-media features, integration with Gmail is awesome. This thing is not to far from a Star Trek Tri-corder.

The screen is AWESOME. I love fooling around and watching Youtube video clips. Web browseing and forum use is easy and fun.

The only down side is all of those features make for big battery useage. But mine lasts all day with typical use and because it uses standard USB for chargeing its drop dead easy to find a place to plug in. Just need a power outlet or ANY pc or MAC to power up.

I think I love this phone more than any other gadget I have ever bought.

Did you download a task killer yet? It should greatly improve your battery life

Not yet. But today I just used it as a phone with out fooling with GPS or wi-fi. Just made a few short calls on my bluetooth head set. Did not even make a dent in the battery. I think I am good.

But I might get it just to make SURE gps is turned off after i use it.

I got the Curve 8530 and it works great for me. I don't like all the other crap on the new iphones. I like to use one hand, hit a few buttons, it makes phone calls, gets email, downloads all the baloney I want to see. It seems fairly rugged to me, its thin which I like, and I don't think it feels cheap but you should decide for yourself.

Ken, how do you go about forcing 2.2 on to the Droid incredible or any droid for that matter? Technologically impaired here !!:D
I heard the Storm can be used internationally but not Droid.

Got my first smartphone 2 weeks ago, and at the end of the day it came down to price. Verizon was running a sale buy one get one free Blackberry's. Not get one free after rebate, but free. So for 200.00+tax my wife and I got 2 new phones, two cases (better than the stock ones they come with, got to keep those too), and two car chargers. So, basically 100.00 a phone..I can live with that. Email is great, browsing isn't bad either. The droids are nice, but the price turned me off, and I like the email service better on blackberry's...instant.

Edit: forgot the add which Blackberry we got. They were the Bold 9700's.

I've never played around with a Droid so can't speak to that one. I used to use an older model BB but recently changed depts at work so gratefully gave it up. I'm just not a big fan of BBs but I appreciate their functionality. Build quality is lacking for one thing IMO. If email access is your most important requirement I think the BB is the better bet. I work at home most days with my work laptop, personal desktop and personal laptop in front of me so I access my personal web email from my laptop whenever I need to.

I went with the iPhone 3G back in Oct 2008 and have had no real issues with it, other than dust getting onto the inside of the screen, likely from the opening where the connector is at the bottom of the phone, since it's in my front pocket a lot of the time. I've never had, or heard of any real issues with cracked screens or any other issues for that matter, with the iPhone.

The BB on the other hand, is a different story. My wife's gone through several in the last 2 yrs. She had an original Bold which was replaced due to trackball issues and the back cover not staying on. She got a new Bold (8700?) with the trackpad and has had issues with that too. She also has an identical Bold from work (yes she walks around with two Bolds all the time now!) and that one had some issues as well.

If you want something for making calls, decent calendar, killing time, etc, the iPhone is my choice. The Google Maps app is great. I use it a lot especially since my Garmin Nuvi tends to send me on wild goose chases sometimes. The internet browser is superior to the BBs IMO also.

The other thing I like about the iPhone is it's integration. When you enter addresses or ph#s in the calendar for example, it hot links them so you can just tap the address, ph#, etc and make the call directly, or go directly to Google maps. No need to copy and paste the address or ph# into the appropriate app to make the call or look up the address on the map. When someone texts you a ph# you can automatically add it to a new contact or existing contact, etc.

I'm waiting for my buddy who works at Rogers Wireless (Canadian GSM provider) to let me know when he gets more 32Gb iPhone 4s in so I can go pick one up. I've played around with one and it blows the 3G and even 3Gs out of the water. That retina display for one thing is amazing. I truly can't distinguish pixels on the screen. I've seen pictures and video from the HD camera and am quite impressed with the quality.

As much as I hate how iTunes works on Windows machines I'm gonna stick with iPhones for now.

Sorry for babbling, just wanted to give my perspective to help you with your choice.

Cheers!

My first and only smartphone has been the iPhone 3gs, and I'm amazed that I lived so long without one! I only use 4-5 different apps regularly, but those save me so much time and energy, especially the "Mental Note." I'm always chasing down a pen to write down something or other, and with this app I can write it with my finger tip! No need to even type it in. The GPS function keeps me from getting too lost, and Google answers my questions. Add in a telephone and I'm a happy guy!
