blackened iron maintenance

Hi

I plan to purchase a Kris Cutlery Gim III sword. It has blackened iron fittings in the handle.

My concern is rust, is blackened iron as prone to rust as carbon steel? I don't want to use oil on the iron since the fittings are too close to the hands. Can car wax protect it against rust?

Car wax will work, but it still should be checkd and reapplied often.
