I read about this knife in Tacticle Knives. It's designed by Kelly McCann, features a 3.25" spear-point ATS-34 blade and a flush-ground high-strength locking-liner mechanism with textured G-10 slabs. Looked great so I ordered one...be here next week. I would be curious to know if anyone has had experience with this piece and how it stands up. Brilliant.....I should of asked you guys BEFORE I ordered it. Well...it looked really good. Anyway...your thoughts?

I haven't got one - but saw them online and thought it would make a great folder. Reminds me of the Emerson Mach combined with a Crawford Kasper...

Anyhow - please post a review when you get it :)

It looks like a short and STOUT bulldog of a knife to me. I'll be interested in hearing your first response to it as I have been thinking about pulling the trigger on one. Did I say that I love short and stout??:D

I got both Fixed and Folder. It a good knives. Even its blade lenght are 3.25 inches but its wide blade made it big enough for all tough work. its handle also comfortable and firm. For me it's worth to buy.

It reminds me a whole lot of the Spyderco Manix. I did get to handle one at Blade, and prefer the Manix.

I also got a Manix. The Manix has longer blade, Thicker, and heavier. Manix's flat grinding made more sharp than Crucible but Crucible is tougher. Manix you can get S30V with cheaper.

Okay.......just got the Crucible Folder in yesterday. It's one hell of a knife. Cuts like crazy, feels great in the hand, shaved arm hair OTB:thumbup: The only drawback is that it's a bitch to close:mad: . You have to hit the "sweetspot" on the liner lock just right or she won't close. My thumbs are raw from repeted attemps. Now, this can be looked at as a plus, as the lock will definately keep that blade in position under heavy pressure which is key for a good tactical folder. It's flush ground so it really locks up tight. However, I think it should be a tad easier to close. Either that or I need tougher thumbs;) Other than that, it's a great piece.

in the article at tactical knives i think he mentioned that they made it harder to close. :) i am thinking about getting one,but would like to get a plain-edge though. what kind of price did you pay for yours?

Now that ya mention it, it did say that in the article  . I bought mine through Downrange Tacticle (www.downrangetactical.com Tel 888-212-1931). I paid $135 plus shipping. That's the best price on this piece that I have found anywhere, and the owner, Joel Knain, is a great guy  . If you speak with him tell him, Jeff from Burbank, CA sent you :) .

As I understand it too, McCann and Bob Kasper are partners/co-trainers. It wouldn't be surprising if they shared the same design philosophy. Several issues back also in Tac. Knives, the editor (Steven Dick) mentioned this particular design specification of Kasper's on liner locks. AFAIR, to be safe, the lock would have to be deeply nestled and you would really have to take a thumbnail in there to close it. Again, harder close but more secure, a small trade-off for a greater benefit.

Oh yeah. . . PICS PLEASE!!! :D

The more I handle this piece the better I like it:thumbup: . The "harder to close" issue is really not an issue with me any longer. The piece is designed that way and for good reason....strength. I agree...give up a little comfort for the greater benifit of knowing your blade ain't goin anywhare. As far as pics....don't have the capability, sorry :o. There are pics on this baby all over the web. Just do a search on Bkackhawk Crucible Folder. If ya decide to buy one ya won't regret it. It's a solid tool.

the more i look at pics of the crucible folder the more i want one! :) now just have to find the funds for one.:(

I think you'll really appreciate the way it feels in the hand as the ergos are excellent, and although it is a large folder, it rides slim in the pocket and really dosn't take up a lot of room. Also, the clip, although quite tight and secure:thumbup: , is dsigned to easily ride over the pocket so you won't be chewin your pants up. Right now I'm alternating between the Crucible and my Buck Strider Military Folder for daily carry. Put $10.00 away every week and you'll have one:D .

They look nice but I think there are much better folders out there for significantly less money.

Granted Redguy, there are lots of good knives for less. However, there are those times when you truly get what you pay for. If you can get your hands on one, and spend some time with it, I think it just might win you over:) .

Ravenfeeder,

Maybe you are right. I really like it and every MODs I've ever seen were well built and nice. I still think $180 is a bit high for an ATS34 bladed linerlock.

There's a link right above where you can get the knife for $135. You can find 'em all day long for under $150. You can also find 'em for more than MSRP. I saw one asking $215, and no, that wasn't for the matched set, it was just for one knife. There are a bunch of 'em on eBay right now ranging from $140 to $190, the majority of 'em somewhere in the middle.

If you Google "Blackhawk Crucible" you'll run across several forum reviews and a couple of professional evaluations. Of the ones I skimmed over, none criticized the ATS34, and all had put it through some pretty heavy paces.

You could do a lot worse for the money it seems.
