Blackhawk Knives?

Hit or miss. Some are great models, others are junk. All of them are relatively expensive (in my opinion) for what they are as compared to other makers. Not bad as a whole...just not anything stellar.

I've tried their BH 30 and 40 models. Both were pretty much nicely made crap. Worst lockup I've seen in awhile on both. The BH40 is a lockback and the lock fails with light hand pressure on the spine. The 30 is an assisted linerlock with a VERY thin liner and has slipped shut a few times. I bought them sight unseen since I liked the design. I'll be sending them in for warranty shortly and see how it goes.

I've been seriously interested in their Crucible knife. Would this be a good quality unlike the others you all have mentioned? It was designed for combat by martial artist Kelly McCann. (The knife was in the September 2008 issue of Combat Handguns, btw, and McCann himself has been in the June and July 2008 Black Belt magazine issues.)

I had the Hornet 2. I came with the thickest edge I have ever seen on a folder, it could not cut paper when i first got it. The handles are also pretty chunky. Not really worth the money in my opnion.

I spoke with someone who works there, and he also stated that the quality wasn't exactly where they wanted it, if you look at their site, prices have come down a lot. I hear they have a lot of new models coming out, quality was a reason the Jani-song never went full production. I hear a Blawkhawk version of the yojimbo is in the works:thumbup:, on a side note, I'd recommend holding the Crucible in your hand before buying, I've held the trainer and the handle is just too wide for me..

I've got a bhb40 on order, I'm really hoping it'll be worthy of the blackhawk name. After RoadMaster78's experience, I'm not sure, but hopefully he just got a bad one. The July issue of Tactical Knives has a write-up on the BHB40 and the author was very positive about them, fwiw.

I've been edc-ing a Kalista for about 2 years now and have no complaints with the quality, fit, and finish. I've even taken it out on a few hikes and campouts and have used it for numerous tasks. It has performed perfectly.

The older MOD models are stellar knives. The new Hornet sucks. The Crucible I owned was also stellar. I carry a Hornet at work and have for a few years. It is an excellant folder on a par with the early MT's. keepem sharp

Have a loaner Crucible II here, have not used it yet, but construction is well done & it fits my hand quite comfortably.
Only downside is manipulating the liner lock. Awkward.

The Kalista I have has/is great, too. No complaints at all, but I haven't been that impressed with their folders, although the Crucible was very nice (IMHO, of course).

:barf:I had a few of the older MOD's. The Hornet and the Pointman (right out of the box) had edges that were thick and wouldn't shave hair. Lock-up on the Pointman was better when the thumbstuds were removed. It was not built well at all. I'm surprised it made it out of the factory.
:thumbup:The Mark II that I had was excellent. Almost a fixed blade when it was open. Blade came sharp and had a wonderfully heat treated 154CM blade. I'd still have it today but my brother insisted on having it for his police work.

My BHB40 came in. It's actually a very decent knife. Lockup is solid, (as long as there isn't lint in the way of the back-lock, which has already happened a few times, I'm sure it's just coincidence). Due to RoadMaster78's warning, I carefully inspected it and tested it quite a bit to make sure it was stable, and it certainly seems to be. I really like the handle shape (I wasn't expecting to like it as well as I do) and the stonewash blade finish is very nice. No real complaints.

My BHB40 is on it's way back for warranty. Mine was very nicely made, but from the start the lock never really had a firm "click" when it was opened. I'm glad yours doesn't have any issues. Hopefully mine will comeback 100%.

Ha! I quoted myself, anyways I see the new modern yojimbo is here although I'm surprised that it has even a hint of a menacing name, be that the first yojimbo was supposed to look like a everyday normal box cutter, and have the blue handle (non-tactical)(and matches blue jeans) and similarly to the "BH-#" models, have a name that wouldn't work against you in court, but all in all I've seen the devastating effects this blade shape inflicts on flesh to bone, and will probably buy one to check it out. Anyone have one already?
