I am interested in purchasing a Blackjack AWAC knife for around $125-145. Since the company is out of business and since I do not have any experience with their products, can anyone give me info. as to the quality of this knife in particular? Thanks.

FYI,if you don't already know, Blackjack knives has been out of business for almost8-10 years. Though they did havesome unique designs, their quality of materials and workmanship were not the greatest. If you want good knives go to http://www.tactical-ops.com .

I don't know much about the AWAC, but IMO BlackJacks Classic line and their B,K,&T line were some of the best production knives made ever.

I believe Camillus has picked up both the BK&T and Blackjack knife companies, and are beginning to produce very similar if not identical patterns.

Here is an old <A HREF="http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum21/HTML/000063.html">link</A>.

Check out the Camillus forum here on Bladeforums. Phil Gibbs and Will Fennell have treated me well. And the new Camillus-BKT Companion looks great.

Thanks for the info! I have seen TOPS but the blade designs seem to be a little too eccentric for me, esp. the saw blade positioned on the knife spine. Any thoughts on Newt Livesay and his fixed blade knives? I own one of his Woo knives and my only complaint is that the blade is too thick. I guess that aids in penetration and strength but gives me the impression it's not a very sharp cutter. Thanks again.

I have a Blackjack Trailguide with a micarta handle that I picked up when Blackjack was still in business. It is a good knife.

It takes and holds a good edge, and has a good heft and balance. It weathers the years well.

I have a Livesay Air Assault - great knife. Very ergonomic handle, 1095 steel, good compromise between a big knife and a little knife. See Jeff Randall's site for a review.

I'm an unrepentant Busse fan, but I've owned several Blackjacks in the past. I currently have one, a Reinhardt Combat Khukri, but I did have an AWAC for quite some time.

The AWAC is a decent handling knife, with a nice grip, and pretty quick balance. I wasn't very happy with the sheath, and the steel was only 440A. While being fairly rust-resistant, it didn't hold an edge for very long at all. Also, I only paid IIRC, $65-70 for it. Over $100 is reaching, based on the last several I've seen listed for sale. There's one listed right now on E-Bay here that's currently holding at $88 as I write this.

I would second several of the opinions above to look at some of the Livesay products, Busse's Basic line, or wait until Camillus rolls out their Becker Knife and Tool line. Some of the older Beckers are much-desired workhorses, and with Camillus bringing them back, they should be winners. I'm looking forward to picking up a couple myself.

Why don't you give Ernest Mayer of BlackCloud knives a look? If you don't see it just ask, he is willing to make knives to your own design.

A.G. Russell has a sale on Blackjack Knives. I got the announcement by email. I looked at what he had to offer, but I can't remember if he had a AWACS. Contact A.G. and he will give you the website address.

As far as I know Blackjack knives only went out of business during 97/98 (not 10 years ago). There is still some inventory available in stores across the country, so keep an eye out.

They made some very good quality production knives, and where on par with other high end specialty production shops like Cold Steel, and Al Mar, or SOG. Their products were marketed under the Blackjack, BK&T, and EK labels. I am glad to see that Cammillus is picking up some of the BK&T line (there were some really good heavy duty camp patterns produced under the label).

If we want to fault them for something let's fault them for producing clones of the well known Randall line. Quality though was never a problem with their stuff. They produced some very good knives at very reasonable prices.

I have a BJ AWAC, and it is a good blade, with a super handle. I wouldn't pay $125 for it though. I got mine for $30-40 from cutleryshoppe when they cleared out their BJ stuff (I did have to buy 3 to get that price, though).
I highly reccommend Newt Livesay's Wicked Knives. I have a US Marshall that is just super. I want to get an HKR next (when the finances allow).
Good luck!
Ebbtide out.

HM,
Thanks for the postings. I really like the Brute by BK Camillus. I'm also considering the Us Marshall by Livesay. It's a little too short for me at 4". If only it came in a 6" configuration. For some reason the ever popular Air Assault and Airborne by Newt don't appeal to me. The search continues. Thanks again.

Cesar, you really have to pick up Newt's 101st to appreciate it. Your index finger feels right at home in the indent & it has a slight point heavy (but not HEAVY) feel to it. Just wants to swing, ya know? As martha stewart would say: "Its a good thing"
What about a CS recon scout?
