so, my neighborhood is having a full power outage. yar.

i of course, am fondling the flashlights :) will probably go for a walk to enjoy the power loss and darkness.

have observed in the past that most of my neighbors don't have backup lights of any kind. my across the hall guys have no candles, flashlights, lanterns, nothing... except a cell phone and a laptop ;) they're completely helpless ;)

also in the past, i've had the chance to use my camp stoves... almost the whole state was without power in places for weeks. you couldn't even get food nearby. yar.

now is when i wish i had quality nightvision, like, high end :) the gen-1 unit it scored for $90 is fun though. everything is GREEN :>

woo

what do YOU do when the power is out? ;)

Run into walls, trip over things and almost fall down the steps. :D

Sleep. Cause it always happens at like 2 in the morning here. I call the power company, give them notice, then go back to sleep. When the power kicks back on, I have so many electronics that it wakes me up regardless of how out I am, I mean the entire house literally beeps all at once. I used to have my computer and router and modem on the UPS so that it had enough time to send me a text message telling me the power was out if I was gone, but since I am usually here, I stopped it doing that. No point really. If it happens while I am still up (like very rarely) then I will usually read. Course, I do that when the power is on, so it isn't much of a change for me.

And I always, always go check to see if it is some idiot that has run into the power pole outside my house, cause if it ever is, and I catch them, I am going to administer the beating of a lifetime.

I take my BK9 outside and start making a new power pole from a Tree. :D

Power is never out for long at my house. We have 3 generators now. 1 Generac 5500 & 2 Honda Eu2000i's with a parellel power kit for camping & what not. Be prepared & self sufficient as is possible. Better to have it & not need it, than, to need it & not have it. NO one "borrows" them either.

Last outage we had, was the dead of summer last year, 97 degrees, 96% humidity.

Me and the girls went out side, and played in the sprinker until about 11 o'clock at night. Then, went in and went to bed. I was sweatin' my ass off.

Most other times, we play board games by hurricane lamp.

Really after living at a place where the wife says our house was supplied by a 3rd world power company :D. You end up owning over time, Generators & fuel, stocking batteries and having many flashlights/headlights, wood stove, camp stoves, gas grill, candles, etc., where you can go Amish when things go Black besides your clothes. :D

I like to run around outside yelling 'HELP ME, HELP ME. I'M AFRAID OF THE DARK' then my neighbors come out and tell me to go to work 'cause its 7o'clock in the morning. :D

But really in the past 6 years I've had my house we've only lost power for more that a few seconds once. But I really feel for those that aren't so lucky.

That sounds like a good time

Having the right gear at the right time and place, plus food and water can make life easy for you and your family when the unexpected happens.

I'm luck and known people who lived much longer without power. 48 hours without power, trapped at the house for 24 (unsafe to leave because of falling trees) and temps below freezing.

Having the normal preparedness plan and gear squared away, I really just like to enjoy the peace and quite of it all... A nice cool night, million stars in the sky small fire going... I need to go test my Beckers...

Fire up the kerosene/hurricane lamps and break out several flashlights that are kept at the ready. I've got one of the newer (unmodded) Maglite LED's (3-D cells) that will throw a concentrated beam out over 1000 ft. that I like to use for scanning the trees and fields.

At my current residence, our power usually gets knocked out for a couple of hours, if that. Barring an event like the 1989 earthquake, it generally tends to be fun: we get the flashlights out, sit at the table, and pretend it's a campout. There are enough flashlights to go around (my 4 year old has her own pink pig flashlight for fun, a purple and pink paracorded Fenix E01, and an older Surefire G2 hand me down. They are in different toy areas in the house because she loves flashlights), but sometimes we light up some candles for ambiance.

Power goes out- We keep the woodstoves stoked- (do that anyway) light the lanterns and watch the time go by. We usually only lose power in storms and that's just good fun.

They don't happen hear very often. when they do I get my camping gear. The power is back on by the time I get it out.
