This year I have taken 2 blacksmithing classes at the Metal Museum of Memphis. In blacksmithing 1 we covered how to start and manage a coal forge and basic hammer techniques. Then we moved onto making hooks, decorative twists, and integrating everything into a coat/pot rack. At this point I was hooked. Here is my coat rack:
I just finishing blacksmithing 2 this past weekend. We learned proper layout techniques, forging and incorporating more decorative layouts, forge welding, and also made/heat treated/and tempered our own center punch and chisel. All of this played out into making a decorative grill.
The instructors Abe and Logan were great. They knew I was interested in knifemaking and gave me some good bladesmithing tips. I tried to forge a blade in between steps and on my lunch break. I actually achieved the shape I was going for and it looked really good until I burnt about a fourth of the top of the blade off! That was pretty disheartening. The good thing is now I can go to the smithy and try again on Sundays.
Thanks for looking.
