As You may have noticed- I am new to this craft and ask loads upon loads of questions. Here is another one :) For me, it is very difficult to make a good bevel and, when making my knife(ill show it in the bottom of the article) i kept making new micro bevels at different angles thus screwing up the blade. Luckily, i had a real maker there with me to fix my mistakes. anyways-I have seen several ways of jigs for making bevels. I am trying myself to make on and am wondering at what is a good scandi grind or flat grind angle- or just a good angle for a bevel. I know there are probably loads of answers to this depending on if i wanted to chop, slice, cut, or any other way of removing material but just want a good range. Insight on this topic would be much appreciated and Thank You to anyone who responds or has responded to any previous posts (only two ^^ )

The angle of the bevel changes with the thickness of the steel, how high the bevels go, and like you said, with how the knife is intended to be used. The better jigs are the ones that don't lock you into one single angle but are adjustable. I have heard great things about Fred Rowe's Bubble Jig, which is more an aid than a jig. Of course, imo, the best way is just to learn to grind free-hand.

OK, Thank you. I will look into that jig, but practice free-hand.

Scandinavian grinds are in the 12 degree per side range for a 5/32 to 3/16 inch thick blade, with no secondary angle at the edge. The other end of that would be wide fighters or bowie blades. At two inches wide their bevels will be in the 2 1/2 degree per side range. Rule of thumb; the wider the steel the more acute the angle can be. False edge angles run in the 25 to 30 per side range depending on the size of the blade.
You've ask an excellent question; blade geometry is all about dimension and grinding angle, if you can master that you can grind a great knife blade.

Never design an edge based on the stock you have. Choose stock that allows the edge you want.

Thank you. that is also very helpful since i love scandi grinds :) I currently don't have the steel for a big Bowie but i will keep your response in mind if i ever get someone who wants one. And, no a lightning bug wont get electrocuted because it is bio-luminescence that makes it glow, not a mini power plant :D I am fairly sure that was a joke and i appreciate your help.
