blade care in the field

on my bk10 I keep it oiled with mineral oil and when I go out camping I make sure I over soak the inside of my kydex sheath with mineral oil, after every use I clean it off and stick it in sheath in and out a few times... if I notice any rust happening I usually just cut up anything acidic and do a quick patina, last time i used an onion.. then when i get back home I will take the handles off give it a good cleaning using 1500 to 2000 grit sand paper then a good buff with a buffing wheel. add mineral oil until I use it again.

I am also in the cold rainy PNW. I don't have much of an issue with rust on my Beckers though. After use I always ensure that I wipe the blade dry before resheathing it. I normally carry a small bottle of CLP (cleaner, lubricant, preservative), or mil tech oil and a small vial of olive oil for cooking, so applying a thin coat of either wouldn't be an issue. I do most of my blade care after the trip. There is a post on the Becker forums where a member carried his in South America, and his blade showed a good deal of rust, but he still had no complaints.

I just let them rust.

Sorry, wish I could offer more help.

If you absolutely HAVE to do field maint. A clean, small piece of rag, soaked with Fluid Film, in a small ziplock bag or bottle/vial. This stuff friggin WORKS !!! I have never had to do field maint if i apply some before i go.

yeah this stuff is really awesome, i even spray it on my quad underneath to all the grease nipples to keep them in good shape! I use this on my BK2 and BK7. Real good stuff!

To be honest just about any oil based substance will work. I figured out the hard way that oil and micarta does not mix though! I was having problems with my handle scales and I had to find out from Moose that oil will break down the fibers eventually. Oh well you live and learn right!
